In addition to countertops and fireplace surrounds, Petaluma, Calif.-based Sonoma Cast Stone has crafted the EarthCrete bath tub line. The company cites environmental sustainability as a primary benefit of its EarthCrete products, since the constituent material comprises 21 percent recycled content, thereby qualifying for points in LEED [U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] projects. Moreover, as compared to standard-thickness wet cast, EarthCrete requires 60 percent less portland cement, Sonoma Cast Stone officials assert. Weighing up to 75 percent less than standard-thickness wet-cast, they add, EarthCrete products reduce carbon output in both fabrication and shipping. Also reducing impact on local waterways, the EarthCrete line uses no river rock and 87 percent less river and delta sand.
Aesthetic benefits include colors that reportedly are more stable and controllable. Additionally, EarthCrete allows more than one color in the same concrete component. It does not form air pockets, and significant strength permits longer sections without seams. The material conforms to virtually any shape for an appealing array of tub configurations, product developers emphasize; and, the finished product exudes a warm and organic ambience.
