COMMERCIAL – FIRST PLACE

Renaissance at Colony Park
Ridgeland, Mississippi

Awarded to:

Site Tech

Roswell, Georgia

Paver suppliers:

Pavestone
Atlanta, Georgia
and
Hardscapes USA
Jackson, Mississippi

Installation of approximately 220,000 sq. ft. of concrete pavers was crucial to meeting aesthetic, performance, and value objectives. Roadways of 8-cm tumbled pavers accentuate Colony Park’s Mediterranean architecture, while providing a durable and attractive hardscape in the desired scale. Poor soil conditions led project engineers to implement a flexible pavement design incorporating a stabilized subgrade, 8-in. aggregate subbase, and 4-in. asphalt base. For pedestrian areas, 6-cm tumbled units and standard 4- _ 8-in. accent pavers were installed over a 4-in. aggregate base and 1-in. sand bed with stabilized sand joints.

COMMERCIAL – SECOND PLACE

City of Daytona Beach Shores Park
Daytona Beach Shores, Florida

Awarded to:

Hanson Hardscapes
Pompano Beach, Florida

Not to be outdone by a major beachside revitalization at neighboring Daytona Beach, suburban Daytona Beach Shores installed a 4,000-sq.-ft. park plaza comprising pavers of eight custom tints sparkling with the reflected light of colored recycled glass fragments and oyster shells. That vibrant appearance was achieved with minimal cost via Hanson’s Facemix production process, which allows a concentration of pigments and recycled glass on the surface of the 60-mm pavers. Moreover, 4- _ 8-in. nonchamfered units provided flexibility in making cuts to create the design.

Nasturtium, Cloudless, Carnival, and Youthful Coral colors helped create the centerpiece scene, consisting of a huge circle depicting waves against the backdrop of a setting sun. Adding dimension to the design is such detailing as light-blue tinted pavers at the tips of the waves to highlight their crashing motion.

Shoppes at Veranda Falls
Port St. Lucie, Florida

Awarded to:

Stone Age Pavers
Fort Pierce, Florida

Paver supplier:

Hanson Pavers
Pompano Beach, Florida

The 163,330-sq.-ft. hardscape for a retail-restaurant complex catering to one of the Treasure Coast’s most prestigious new communities artfully echoes the tenor of its setting. A seamless fit was achieved using various pavers, including Super Octo and 3?-in.-thick, 4- _ 8-in. units for roadways, as well as 2?-in.-thick, 4- _ 8-in. nonchamfered pavers for pedestrian applications. Throughout the plaza in areas where vehicular and pedestrian wearing courses meet, 4- _ 8-in. truncated units provide transition.

Off-white colored pavers defining roadway lane dividers, turn arrows, and stop bars stand to minimize maintenance costs, since painting will not be needed to refresh demarcations. Achieving the 6-in. width required for lane stripes involved cutting 4- _ 8-in. units and placing them in a custom pattern compliant with Department of Transportation regulations.

A suitable subbase was installed for both pedestrian and vehicular areas. Pavers then were set on a leveling course of compacted, recycled concrete screenings.

Villa Roma Hotel Fountain
Callicoon, New York

Awarded to:

Lighthouse Design & Development
Smithtown, New York

Paver supplier:

Nicolock Paving Stones
North Haven, Connecticut

Owner and operator of the major upstate New York hotel for 35-plus years, Villa Roma’s proprietor undertook renovation of his facility after a devastating fire in 2006. A 2,600-sq.-ft. hardscape installation at the hotel’s entrance was a significant part of that project. Today, pavers spanning a 12-ft. radius encircle a 25-ft.-diameter gunite water fountain; and, a 21-in. sitting wall, plus night pier lighting, accommodates clients.

A 4-ft. grade difference from end to end of the site prosed a challenge for installers. Accordingly, 4-in. lifts were executed 12 times to achieve level ground for the patio and pedestrian walkway.

Providing the installation’s main field are 6- _ 9-in. nontumbled Golden Brown pavers. Border units measuring 4- _ 8-in. are also nontumbled and Golden Brown. Between the main field and outermost edging is an inside border of 3.5-in.-square Chamois-colored pavers. Golden Brown 3-in. and 4-in. Colonial Wall units form the sitting walls and 2- _ 2- _ 4-ft. piers, respectively.

For a 3,483-sq.-ft. driveway, Aqua-Bric multicolored permeable pavers provide ÎgreenÌ value as well as curb appeal complementing the architecture of a LEED-certified home. The decision to install a 6-in. base of clean #57 stone and 2-in. bed of #8 stone was dictated by the site’s NRCS Class A Type soil, which allows high levels of infiltration. To prevent fines from filling voids and entering the perimeter, sides of the system were enclosed with nonwoven geotextile.

Soon after installation, the Aqua-Bric system Û Florida’s first Û was put to the test: Tropical Storm Fay rolled through the Treasure Coast area, dropping record levels of rain. The pavement’s performance exceeded design specifications and proved effective in capturing first-flush pollutants.

RESIDENTIAL – SECOND PLACE

Eustace Residence
Jensen Beach, Florida

Awarded to:

Hanson Hardscapes
Pompano Beach, Florida

The masterful 20,000-sq.-ft. hardscape provides a suitable entryway for one of the largest homes on Florida’s Treasure Coast. Combining an octagon and square in a single unit, the Octo Cobble paver offers a high degree of interlock while forming patterns that recall Old World elegance. Throughout the installation, 60-mm-thick pavers were set on a 1-in. bed of sand over a 6-in.-thick road rock base.

A colorful blend of yellows, browns, and reds enriches an expansive field contained by a double border and contrasting bands of 4- _ 8-in. pavers in an earth-tone blend of terracotta, tan, and charcoal. Additionally, creating the illusion of outdoor area rugs are 12-in.-square, ivory-tinted units, punctuated by 4-in.-square, gold-hued pavers and enclosed by a border of darker earth tones. Further detailing includes strategic placement of pavers specifically fabricated to form 9-ft.-diameter circles accenting the roadway strip.

Getz Walkway
Phoenix, Arizona

Awarded to:

Geckostone
Volcano, Hawaii

Paver supplier:

Central Arizona Block Co.
Tucson, Arizona

In just three days, using GeckoStone proprietary pavers, the owner was able to complete prep work and installation of a 120-sq.-ft. walkway joining his back door and pool. The units were set on a compacted sand bed, and joints were filled with #30 silica sand. Because the pavers are snugly interlocking, no border restraints were required, allowing seamless integration with landscape features.

The GeckoStone pavers were fabricated via hydraulic press by Central Arizona Block Co. in Tucson under license from their designer, John August. Davis Colors pigments were used to tint the 2_ -in.-thick units, featuring exactly ?-sq.-ft. surface area each and 5,000-psi compressive strength. A textured surface provides excellent traction.

Crespi Residence
Glen Cove, New York

Awarded to:

The Deck and Patio Co.
Huntington Station, New York

The client purchased a home on Long Island’s exclusive North Shore with the primary intent of creating a spectacular, vanishing-edge pool. To that end, multiple elevations were established as part of a luxury outdoor environment showcasing a free-form concrete, vinyl-lined 32- _ 50-ft. pool/spa with a 20-ft. vanishing edge and natural stone fa¡ade. Additional elements of the resort-style pool include a tri-level floor serving the swim-up bar/BBQ, underwater bar stools, in-floor cleaning, deep-end steps, love seat/step, and two waterfalls.

Enhancing the pool-side setting are a four-level, 3,000-sq.-ft. Techo Bloc tumbled stone patio, two natural-gas campfires, and a 50-ft. outdoor kitchen. Over 1,500 yards of recycled concrete aggregate were imported to create various grades in and around the pool area. Elevation changes throughout the site are controlled by a series of tumbled stone retaining walls, boulders, slopes, and plantings. A large koi pond adds further interest, and a bridge next to the patio leads to the end of the bluff.

Formulating a fully functional installation involved AutoCAD plans and 3-D modeling to determine pool/spa placement and integrate patio space, vanishing edge, and panoramic views, including a water-to-water viewing angle. Subsequently, soil stabilization was the foremost concern: during excavation, temporary drainage systems and soil-retention methods were implemented to minimize construction runoff into Long Island Sound. A soil analysis was required to achieve proper compaction ratios for all built structures, including subgrades for all patios. As the bluff falls under DEC protection, no soil erosion or stormwater runoff would be allowed to migrate from the premises.
