San Francisco independent producer Bode Concrete, LLC operates the first California ready mixed plant to carry Green-Star certification. Audits leading to the certification recognized especially the producer’s installation of a 450,000-gal. storm water-retention system and returned-concrete reclaimer at its San Francisco Bay-front site. Reinforcing the Green-Star undertaking is Bode Concrete’s goal to replace 5 percent of portland cement with supplementary cementitious materials.
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association launched the Green-Star program last year, complete with webinar-based training sessions for auditors, who typically are staff members of certification-minded producers. The NRMCA Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee’s Environmental Task Force promotes Green-Star as a ready mixed plant-specific audit process for Environmental Management Systems, widely recognized in general industry and government agencies. OES Committee members describe EMS as a tool for environmental benchmarking and continual improvement; Green-Star certification, in turn, indicates a producer’s adherence to sustainability movement principles.
