Barrier Systems, whose movable concrete barrier technology has been widely deployed to create reversible traffic lanes, is promoting the U-MAD trailer-mounted attenuator (TMA), aimed at protecting errant motorists who impact slow-moving or stationary shadow vehicles. In use worldwide to make work zones safer, the manufacturer notes, U-MAD trailer units offer flexible, low-cost protection in any short-term work area where highway workers or equipment require the protection of a support vehicle. The TMA has been engineered to keep impacting and support vehicles in the travel lane even after angle collisions. Further, its design allows the system to be reused after impact by replacing an easy-to-install standard U-MAD cartridge, thereby reducing cost of ownership.
Fully tested in accordance with National Cooperative Highway Research Program 350 and FHWA-approved for use on the federal highway system, U-MAD TMAs attach to a standard pintle hook. They are available in two styles: TL-2 with a 45-mph capacity or TL-3 with a 62-mph capacity. Product developers emphasize that both offer excellent stability in angled and offset impacts to prevent vehicles from entering adjacent lanes.
