Drawing a record number of entries in its 14th year, the annual Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards program in 2008 honors 23 facilities operated by 14 producers. A panel of judges evaluated submissions on the basis of 10 criteria covered in a written narrative, plus photographs illustrating air- and water-pollution control methods, noise-abatement measures, and landscaping. Cosponsored by Concrete Products magazine and the Environmental Task Group of the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s Operations, Environment and Safety Committee, the competition offers producers national recognition for outstanding achievements in environmental stewardship and operations management.

Saluting companies that satisfied Û and surpassed Û governmental compliance requirements through plant and staff investment, the contest this year provided awards in five categories based on production volume. Additionally, Comeback Kid awards were received by four plants implementing an extreme makeover to improve environmental capabilities. All recognized facilities were honored last month at NRMCA’s Concrete-Works in Nashville.

The Environmental Excellence Awards program is open to any NRMCA member company owning a fixed plant in the U.S. or Canada. To be eligible, facilities must have operated in full compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations for a minimum of two years. Criteria weighed by the judges include compliance, site aesthetics, written plant procedures, training and employee involvement, water/solid waste management, air quality management, community relations, operating challenges, overall management commitment, and environmental delivery awareness.

Congratulations are extended to all personnel who contributed to the winning efforts of facilities recognized in this year’s competition. The plants cited here comprise the vanguard of an industry-wide initiative to promote environmental stewardship. Especially noteworthy, NRMCA affirms, is the status of Transit Mix Concrete & Materials’ Seven Points (Texas) operation Û a Category A winner Û as the first plant to be certified under its Green Star Environmental Management Systems program.

Since the Environmental Excellence Awards are sustained by contestants’ participation, producers are encouraged to enter their plants for the 2009 competition. Entry forms are available at www.nrmca.org.

Entries for the Environmental Excellence program were split into five categories based on the plant’s annual production volume:

A Û less than 25,000 yd.; B Û between 25,000 and 50,000 yd.; C Û between 50,000 and 100,000 yd.; D Û between 100,000 and 200,000 yd.; and, E Û more than 200,000 yd.
