Los Angeles-based concrete mix-optimization specialist iCrete reports that its production technology and quality-control methods have surfaced at more than 30 sites around metropolitan New York Û less than a year after commercial roll out. iCrete officials are promoting strength development and other performance properties of concrete formulated with their proprietary mix designs. Underscoring those claims is the specification of iCrete mixes on three New York City high-rise projects involving some of the world’s top architectural/engineering talent.

The most notable project, the World Trade Center site-anchoring Freedom Tower, is using proprietary mixes with design strengths up to 14,000 psi, a record for New York City buildings. In addition to engineering properties, iCrete officials cite their mixes’ role in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, presumably due to the use of supplementary cementitious materials to replace portland cement at factors up to 40 percent. Notes iCrete CEO Juan Carlos Terroba, This represents the first major shift in 100 years in the way concrete is prepared. With the iCrete System available worldwide, he adds, the rising costs of materials, labor and concrete itself have no geographic borders.
