Effective this month, Mark Towe has replaced Tom Hill as chief executive of Oldcastle, the North American business of Dublin-based CRH Plc. The resignation of Hill, who was CRH’s most seasoned senior manager this side of the Atlantic, was announced in late June concurrent with his departure from the CRH board. Prior to his elevation, Towe had served for two years as Oldcastle Materials chief executive, a post from which Hill had been elevated.

Hill climbed the Oldcastle Materials Division ranks from Callanan Industries, an Albany, N.Y., aggregate and asphalt producer Oldcastle acquired in 1985. From the mid-1990s through the decade forward, Hill oversaw Materials’ ramp up as a national operator with top five positions in U.S. aggregates, ready mixed, and asphalt production.

Towe joined Oldcastle Materials as chief operating officer in 1997, bringing more than two decades’ experience in aggregates and asphalt production. Along with his new position he has joined the CRH board. Replacing Towe is Doug Black, who since July 2006 had been Oldcastle Materials president and COO. He joined the company in 1995, rose through the Oldcastle Precast ranks, and was Oldcastle Architectural Products Group CEO prior to the Materials shift. His successor, Bill Sandbrook, has been appointed chief executive of Oldcastle Products & Distribution, responsible for the Architectural Products, Precast, Glass, MMI and Distribution businesses.

The North American management team changes follow the recent designation of Dublin-based Myles Lees, CRH chief financial officer, successor to Liam O’Mahony, who is retiring as chief executive at year’s end.
