Founded in 1983 by Luther Elkin in Indiana, Pa., Elkin Hi-Tech celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2008. The company was born when Luther and his son Rick, originally suppliers of concrete to local contractors, identified the need for improved concrete mixing technology, i.e., easy-to-use, mobile concrete mixers that could produce concrete on the job site in small or large volumes. The solution Luther envisioned could not be found on existing concrete mixers; thus, he would create a volumetric truck model to address his needs and those of his customers.

Current Elkin Hi-Tech volumetric mixers include multiple patented features, including a flexible auger trough that reportedly maximizes the mixer’s production efficiency and extends auger life; as well as a vibratory system inside the cement-metering wheel that is said to reduce cement buildup and enhance mix uniformity for consistent concrete quality. Accordingly, Elkin’s volumetric mixer yields fresh concrete to the customer’s specification, on-site, when the customer wants it, and in the exact amount required, while wasting no time or materials, company officials contend.

Over the last quarter-century, the Elkin Hi-Tech product line has grown to include truck-mounted, trailer-mounted, and stationary volumetric mixers that can prepare up to 10 yards of concrete at the customer’s location. Additionally, the manufacturer fabricates cement silos, enabling the customers to lower cement costs by buying in bulk. High production batch plants also are available and can be custom designed to meet producer and contractor specifications.
