MDU has acquired Yarbrough’s Dirt Pit, Inc. (dba Yarbrough’s Material & Construction), which operates a ready mixed plant and 300,000-plus-tons/year aggregate distribution yard near Sour Lake, Texas. Located about 25 miles west of Beaumont, and serving that city along with Port Arthur, Yarbrough will become part of the South Region of Knife River Corp., MDU’s construction materials and contracting subsidiary.

The acquisition complements Quality Concrete & Material Co., a Beaumont ready mixed and aggregate operator Knife River acquired in fall 2007. Knife River chartered the South Region in 2003 with a deal for Young Brothers Inc., a Waco, Texas, ready mixed, aggregate and asphalt producer with companion road-building and trucking operations.

“Yarbrough strengthens our corporation in the construction materials business in an area that is experiencing strong industrial and commercial growth,” says MDU Resources CEO Terry Hildestad. “We intend to continue acquiring successful and well-managed companies, like Yarbrough, to increase our presence in construction.”
