An intensive conference/training program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will explore technical and practical issues involved in maintaining concrete and cast stone fa¡ades, exterior components, and structural elements of buildings and outdoor monuments and sculpture. Concrete & Cast Stone in the 21st Century: Design, Preservation & Care of Contemporary & Historic Architecture, scheduled March 29-30 at the Cambridge, Mass., campus will also provide cost-benefit analyses of procedures for preserving and protecting building envelopes, ornamentation, and artistic works.

Sponsors Technology & Conservation, M.I.T. Department of Architecture’s Building Technology Program, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA’s Historic Resources Committee note that the conference will provide valuable, practical information for professionals seeking greater familiarity with specifying and performance of concrete and cast stone used currently and in the past for structures, architectural ornamentation, and works of art. Moreover, attendees will be exposed to current design innovations; evaluation, care, and treatment procedures for extending the useful life of concrete and cast stone buildings, ornamentation, and outdoor sculpture and monuments; plus, concrete and cast stone properties.

Lecturers include 30-plus recognized authorities on architecture, building preservation, structural engineering, facilities planning, material fabrication, and construction. A $495 per person registration fee includes the conference, two luncheons, and a reception. An optional tour on March 31 of Boston and Cambridge concrete and cast stone structures is available to conference registrants at no additional charge.
