According to research carried out by Tekla Structures, users of 3-D modeling software can expect:

  • Estimated potential benefit ranging from 2.3 to 4.2 percent of net project cost
  • Time required to model structural projects at a level of detail suitable for erection drawings (including initial connections) ranging from 0.46 to 0.55 hours per 1,000 sq. ft. versus 2.4 to 16 hours, depending on the size of the drawing
  • An overall reduction of between 31 and 43 percent of the hours required for a project Û a conservative ballpark range for the degree of cost savings attainable from productivity gains in drawing production alone, in view of drawing production activities accounting for an average of 69 percent of hours spent on a typical project (as revealed by a benchmark study). Consideration of potential benefits in the other activities brings the reduction estimate to the range of 33 to 49 percent.
  • Achievable benefit in degree depending primarily on the proportion of drawing production activity to firm’s overall activity, as the greatest increase in productivity is obtained in this area, ranging from 21 to 61 percent.
