Released in mid-August, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute Industry Sales Profile survey indicates a 3.2 percent increase in North American paving stone shipments from 2005 to 2006. Last year saw producers ship approximately 800 million square feet (74.3 million sq. meters) of concrete pavers–a volume yielding a stack of product 134,943 miles high.

Since the survey’s 1998 inception, industry output has grown 162 percent with a 12.9 percent average annual gain. Residential continues to be the largest market, accounting for 79.8 percent of 2006 concrete paver sales, followed by commercial at 13.1 percent and municipal and industrial/port/airport market at 6 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. In the current survey, U.S. and Canadian participants were asked to break out permeable interlocking paver sales. That category represents 1.8 percent of the total residential, commercial and municipal market shipments; its growth prospects reflect federal, provincial, state and local governments’ pursuit of improved stormwater runoff management.
