Following a rollout at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Mack Trucks dispatched 20 Granite and Pinnacle trucks for a three-month North American tour aimed at demonstrating performance of the company’s US ’07-certified Mack MP engines. The Mack Performance Tour trucks include Granite-mounted Beck Industrial, Continental CBMW, McNeilus, and Schwing Stetter mixers, plus three dumps.

The concrete and aggregate vehicles are equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPF), the centerpiece of heavy-duty truck engines complying with new Environmental Protection Agency emissions guidelines. The DPF are mounted vertically on the mixers, where back-of-cab clearance is abundant; shorter CAP versions are mounted under the cabs of dumps, where back-of-cab space is restricted.

The Performance Tour is providing Mack Trucks, dealers and customers additional data on how concrete and aggregate delivery duty cycles affect active and passive regeneration processes within the DPF, where captured soot particles are vaporized. Regeneration injects a small amount of fuel into the filter, creating a chemical reaction whose elevated temperature oxidizes the soot, then releases water and carbon dioxide. Regeneration will not process all soot, thereby requiring DPF to be cleaned at Mack-recommended intervals of 4,500 hours for mixer and other vocational applications, or 150,000 miles for highway vehicles.

The entire Granite and Pinnacle Performance fleet will be available for test drives as it makes the rounds at U.S. and Canadian dealerships through the end of September. Notes Mack V.P. of Marketing Tom Kelly, Customers have told us they really want to see the US ’07 engines and experience their operation so they can get comfortable with the emissions technology. Dealerships will publicize their own events locally with customers, he adds, while Mack Trucks provides tour schedules on a special website, www.mackperformancetour.com.
