Staged at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, the 2007 International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE) will offer what event sponsors term an unprecedented range of preshow and at-show educational sessions targeting underground, above-ground and overhead applications. ICUEE 2007, known as the Demo Expo, also will feature hands-on working equipment demonstrations and one million-plus net square feet of equipment, technology, product and service innovations during its Oct. 16—18 run.
A cornerstone of the ICUEE 2007 education offerings will be a co-located program conducted by Underground Construction Technology, an authoritative industry source for education and training programs related to underground construction and rehabilitation infrastructure. The complete curriculum is geared to meet the demands of multiple industry sectors, including sewer/water, general construction, and landscaping. Session topics will be grouped into several tracks: (a) Industry Trends, covering telecom infrastructure, landslide and erosion stabilization, job-site security, vegetation management, and utility design/construction; (b) Equipment/Fleet Management, including alternative fuels and emissions, vehicle specification and procurement, bucket truck maintenance and inspection requirements, plus hybrid technology applications; (c) Safety and Standards, specifically, work zone compliance, digger derrick standards, arc flash- and flame-resistant clothing, and National Electric Safety Code and OSHA construction standard updates and changes; and, (d) Management Trends, including communication styles, leadership strategies for optimum crew performance, and motivating and retaining employees. All 2007 ICUEE show seminars will offer attendees Continuing Educational Units (CEUs) credit.
Attendees receive extra value by participating in preshow programs. Presented by Underground Construction Technology just prior to the ICUEE opening will be an advanced horizontal directional drilling (HDD) workshop targeting both the seasoned driller seeking a refresher course and novices looking to improve their knowledge and capabilities. Preshow offerings also include two Occupational Safety and Health Administration certification courses: (1) The OSHA 10-Hour Construction Course, conducted by Eastern Kentucky University’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center, provides an awareness of construction safety and health principles, including OSHA policies, procedures and standards; and, (2) OSHA Excavation, Trenching and Soil Mechanics focuses on a better understanding of agency standards and safety issues related to excavation and trenching. The course includes a one-day field exercise.
Educational sessions staged during ICUEE 2007 offer additional opportunities across a range of topics:
-
The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) Trench Rescue Awareness program aims to help contractors and rescue personnel better understand trench safety issues, including hidden hazards associated with trench rescue operations.
-
A field trip to the McAlpine Locks and Dam will focus on the site’s nearly complete reconstruction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
