Hanson Pipe & Precast has announced two promotions: Eric Wheeler will serve as the company’s Northeast region president, overseeing operations in Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ontario, Rhode Island, South Dakota, North Carolina and Virginia; and, Sue Tanenbaum, who as Western region president will oversee operations in Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Wheeler joined Hanson in 2001 as the Pacific Northwest area manager and subsequently served as president of the company’s Western region. Before joining Hanson Pipe & Precast, he was president and chief executive officer of Quikset Organization’s East Coast division. Active in the concrete industry, Wheeler has participated in the Pacific Northwest Precast Concrete Association and the Underground Contractors Association.

Prior to her promotion, Tanenbaum was vice president and general manager of the Northeast region’s Midwest area. She joined Hanson in 1999 with the acquisition of Ontario, Canada-based Loc Pipe Inc., her family’s concrete pipe and precast business. Within the family enterprise, Tanenbaum became involved in all aspects of production and sales, eventually working her way up to company president. She has held directorships on local and North American industry associations, serving most recently as vice president of the Minnesota Concrete Pipe Association.

Separately, Hanson Pipe & Precast has formed a partnership with the Houston Museum of Natural Science timed with the recent opening of a new, fully automated facility in Houston. Among initial partnership activities was a mid-April family-day event held in conjunction with Frog Fest 2007, during which children adorned a concrete cylinder with decorative tiles, donated by Hanson, to create a tree planter that will be on display at the museum. During the decorating session, a Hanson representative provided information on water transportation from ancient Rome to modern day Houston Û a topic complementary both to Hanson’s role as a supplier of pipe for drinking- and storm water conveyance and the Museum’s Imperial Rome exhibition.

In addition, Hanson Pipe is sponsoring an IMAX documentary film, Hurricane on the Bayou, showcasing the vital swamps of Louisiana Û before, during and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As a producer of AeroDwell precast wall panels, well suited to rapid construction of hurricane-resistant homes, Hanson is dedicated to rebuilding efforts in areas affected by the hurricanes.

The partnership also entails Hanson Pipe’s sponsorship of a book club for the 2007-2008 academic year, a new museum initiative in which greater Houston area schools will participate. To the school that wins the Museum’s reading contest, Hanson will donate a concrete planter to be decorated and displayed on school grounds as permanent landscaping.

For outstanding service promoting New Jersey’s infrastructure planning and its construction industry, George E. Hand, Sr., president of Oldcastle Precast‘s Eastern U. S. Pipe Group and chief operating officer of National Pipe Operations, was inducted into the Barton E. Harrison New Jersey Alliance for Action Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies were held in mid-April during the Alliance for Action’s South Jersey regional dinner at Tavistock Country Club.

The Harrison Alliance for Action Hall of Fame honors the late Mr. Harrison, the Alliance’s South Jersey regional vice chairman and a founding member of the board of the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust (NJEIT). The second Alliance inductee, Hand has led the East Pipe Group Û comprising plants in Folsom and Farmingdale, N.J., as well as facilities in Pennsylvania and North Carolina Û to double in size over the last four years. He has provided infrastructure expertise for 30-plus years, contributing to state, local, and private N.J. construction initiatives in his capacity as a precast company executive.
