Hanson Pipe & Precast gained a North Carolina toehold and expanded its reach in Texas following two deals to open the new year. The first involved the assets of Oakboro, N.C.-based Concrete Pipe Inc., specializing in 12- to 48-in. drainage product. Our first North Carolina pipe and precast facility complements existing facilities in southern Virginia, says Northeast Region President Bob Christensen. This acquisition also gives us the opportunity to partner with sister company, Hanson Brick & Tile, a long-standing business based in Charlotte.

Concrete Pipe began producing dry cast product in 1996; its facility, located about 25 miles east of Charlotte, will offer an expanded line of products including larger-diameter reinforced concrete pipe. Christensen notes that the facility will be part of Hanson’s Northeast operating region, based in Columbus, Ohio, and managed through Don Wagner, vice president of southern Virginia. In addition to conventional concrete pipe and drainage structures, the region’s 26 plants produce sound barriers, precast vaults, and HansonArch and QuickSpan bridge members.

Shortly after the Concrete Pipe announcement, Hanson closed on W.T. Liston Co., an old-line concrete pipe and precast producer in La Feria, Texas. The deal affords Hanson, a fixture in Dallas and Houston, greater presence in the fast-growing Rio Grande Valley markets of Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen. This facility provides a central location to reach customers in [those] communities and reinforces Hanson’s commitment to growing its current and prospective pipe and precast business, notes Clifford Hahne, president of Hanson’s South Central Region. Based in Grand Prairie, Texas, the region encompasses 26 operations in the Lone Star State, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. W.T. Liston was founded in 1919 by the great grandfather of the former owner, Pat Liston, who is joining Hanson Pipe & Precast.
