After two years of development, peer review, and balloted revision, ASTM Subcommittee C27.30 has published the first standard specification addressing sealing requirements of pipe entry into on-site (septic) treatment systems. Designated C 1644-06 Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete On-Site Wastewater Tanks and Pipes, the new standard provides flexible sealing and eliminates infiltration and exfiltration from pipe entry. In specifying the requirements for permanent, flexible, watertight sealing of pipe entry into on-site tanks, it includes:
- Minimum material requirements for all components
- Performance requirements demonstrating sealing at a minimum 5 psi hydrostatic pressure (11.5 foot head) against both infiltration and exfiltration in each of three conditions:
a. Pipe in straight alignment
b. Pipe with shear load of 50-lb./in. diameter
c. Pipe at angle of at least 7 degrees
- Testing of each outside diameter and pipe type for which the connector is recommended
To upgrade local requirements, engineers as well as specifiers, sanitarians, and tank manufacturers can incorporate the new standard specification for improved watertightness of on-site systems.
