Headwaters Resources, Texas EMC Products, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Caltrans are among entities and agencies the Environmental Protection Agency has recognized for advancing fly ash usage in concrete production and practice. Winners in the annual Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2) awards program were announced during the National Recycling Coalition’s Annual Congress in Atlanta earlier this fall, and included by category:
-
Overall Achievement-Great River Energy, whose work with Headwaters increased fly ash sales from the Coal Creek Station to 417,000 tons in 2005.
-
Environmental Achievement, First Place-Wal-Mart, whose environmental and construction practices have seen consumption of 350,000 tons of fly ash in concrete over the past 10 years.
-
Partnership, First Place-Texas EMC Products (joint venture of Few Ready Mix of Jasper, Texas, and EMC Cement BV, The Netherlands), whose ash-processing technology yields DuraPozz, a material with slag and fly ash properties suited for portland cement replacement at volumes up to 60 percent.
-
Innovation-First Place, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). A leader in the use of fly ash in paving projects, it recently specified high volume ash mixes for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the largest crossing in agency history.
-
Special Recognition-University of Kentucky, Center for Applied Energy Research, whose Fast-Float processing technology derives from otherwise non-concrete grade material a quality, ultra-fine ash suited for high-performance concrete.
The EPA C2P2 program also presented Lifetime Achievement awards to Dr. V. Mohan Malhotra and Dr. P. Kumar Mehta for extensive research in fly ash concrete. C2P2 is a voluntary partnership, with more than 150 private and public partners working to increase the beneficial use of coal ash.
