Encon United of Denver and GPRM Prestress of Hawaii have joined AltusGroup Inc. as producer members, expanding availability of the CarbonCast brand precast west of the Mississippi. Encon has enlisted with plans to fabricate highway slabs, girders and deck panels at its Thornton, Colo, bridge division plant. GPRM Prestress will produce CarbonCast at its Kapolei plant, about 25 miles west of Honolulu, initially focusing on architectural cladding. The CarbonCast technology combines carbon fiber reinforcement and self consolidating concrete mixes to yield lighter weight products with improved surface and durability characteristics versus conventional steel-reinforced precast.

Essroc Italcementi Group, Nazareth, Pa., has joined the group as an Innovation Partner, whereby it will assist in research and product testing. Essroc aims to explore how its new TX Active photocatalytic cement technology for self-cleaning and pollution-mitigating concrete can add to CarbonCast’s sustainability benefits. Essroc is the second Altus Innovation Partner in cement, joining Lafarge North America. Since its 2004 launch, Lancaster, Pa.-based AltusGroup has grown to 10 precasters nationwide licensed to sell CarbonCast products from more than 30 operations that serve 15 of the country’s top 20 metropolitan areas.
