The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Convention and National Bridge Conference was the occasion as well for additional award presentations recognizing contributions to research and design in the advancement of precast and prestressed concrete; plant production, site erection, or general construction using precast, prestressed concrete; and/or innovative precast, prestressed concrete technologies. Each award carries a $300 prize, plus a plaque noting each recipient’s achievement:

Charles C. Zollman Award Û Nine authors of three papers published in the PCI Journal share the award, renamed to honor the first chairman of the institute’s Technical Activities Committee, who played a prominent role in design and construction of Walnut Lane Memorial Bridge, North America’s first major long-span prestressed concrete bridge. Among the winners are Martha VanGeem, PE, LEEP, AP, of the CTL Group in Skokie, Ill.; Robert Fleischman, Ph.D., Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, University of Arizona, Tucson; Clay Naito, Ph.D., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa.; Jose Restrepo, Ph.D., Department of Structural Engineering, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla; Richard Sause, Ph.D., Department of Civil Engineering, Lehigh University; Dr. Satyendra Ghosh, president, S.K. Ghosh Associates Inc., Palatine, Ill.; Ge Wan, graduate student, Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, University of Arizona; Liling Cao, graduate student, Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Lehigh University; and, Matt Schoettler, graduate student, Department of Civil Engineering, University of California.

VanGeem was honored for her paper, Achieving Sustainability with Precast Concrete, published in the January-February 2006 issue of PCI Journal. Fleischman, Naito, Restrepo, Sause and Ghosh received the award for their work on two papers: Seismic Design Methodology for Precast Concrete Diaphragms Part 1: Design Framework and Seismic Design Methodology for Precast Concrete Diaphragms Part 2: Research Program, published in PCI Journal September-October and November-December 2005 issues, respectively. Wan, Cao and Schoettler were recognized also for their contributions to Seismic Design Methodology for Precast Concrete Diaphragms Part 1: Design Framework.

Martin P. Korn Award Û An article titled Behavior of Double-Tee Flange Connectors Subjected to In-Plane Monotonic and Reversed Cyclical Loads, published in PCI Journal’s November-December 2005 issue, garnered an award for Dr. Michael Oliva and Dr. Jose Pincheira of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Dr. Wei Zheng of Madison-based Flad & Associates.

Robert J. Lyman Award Û For their winning paper on New Technologies Proven in Precast Concrete Modular Floating Pier for U.S. Navy, published in PCI Journal’s July-August 2005 issue, four co-authors were recognized: Michael Lanier, executive vice president, and Markus Wernli, senior project manager of Berger/ABAM Engineers Inc., Federal Way, Wash.; Robert Easley, senior project manager of Concrete Technology Corp., Tacoma, Wash.; and, Preston Springston, U.S. Navy NFESC, Shore Facilities Program manager (ESC60PM), Port Hueneme, Calif.

George D. Nasser Award Û Dr. W. Michael Hale of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Arkansas was honored for his paper, Effect of Allowable Compressive Stress at Release on Prestress Losses and on the Performance of Precast, Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders, published in the March-April 2006 issue of PCI Journal. The award recognizes authors 40 years of age or younger for Journal papers worthy of special commendation.
