NRMCA’s Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee formulated an obstacle course feasible for a venue hosting the 2006 Forum & Expo. Committee members established rules and guidelines, and served as judges for drivers tackling the course’s seven challenges:
- Driving straight forward and in reverse ÷ passing right-side (forward) or driver’s side (reverse) tires through a row of 10 tennis balls on rubber pedestals
- Front stop ÷ testing ability to align bumper with fixed pavement marking
- Left turn ÷ testing ability to judge clearance around tires while turning without stopping, attempting to place right front tire as close as possible to a cone
- Backing to a barricade, testing ability to navigate a narrow space and stop the rearmost portion of truck within a specific field
- Parallel parking along a simulated curb using forward and reverse gears
- Weigh scale, testing ability to judge location of right rear tandem tires while backing to a weigh scale represented by a box outline on the pavement
