Shell Reformulates Oil To Meet Demands Of 2007 Engines

Promising significantly lower wear, deposit control and engine cleanliness on pre-2007 engines and new 2007-complaint truck engines, Shell Lubricants

Promising significantly lower wear, deposit control and engine cleanliness on pre-2007 engines and new 2007-complaint truck engines, Shell Lubricants recently introduced its Rotella T motor oil with Triple Protection technology.

Based on extensive industry-recognized engine wear tests performed by Shell Lubricants, Rotella T with Triple Protection provides on average 50 percent greater wear protection (ranging from 27 to 88 percent) than the previous formulation, according to the company. These laboratory-based findings are backed up by the results of more than 5.5 million miles of on-highway road testing using current-generation engines, in which significantly lower iron wear was found.

Shell Rotella T with Triple Protection technology meets or exceeds API CJ-4 specifications for diesel motor oil, in part due to an exclusive detergent system designed for control of piston deposits in 2007 engines, says Dan Arcy, technical marketing manager for Shell Lubricants. We also expect that owner/operator and fleet maintenance technicians will notice the wear protection for valve train components.

In addition, the technology is formulated with 30 percent more active ashless chemistry for protection against deposits and sludge. The detergent system is designed to control high-temperature piston deposits. The lower ash content in the oil also helps optimize the durability and performance of 2007 engines’ diesel particulate filters (DPFs), which will potentially need to be cleaned less often. In most cases, this will result in lower maintenance costs and improved fuel economy.

Like the previous technology, the new Rotella formula will continue to offer strong performance in the areas of resistance to viscosity loss due to shear down and soot-induced thickening to help maintain consistent viscosity throughout the maintenance interval.

In addition to meeting all of the specification criteria for the new API CJ-4 service category for diesel motor oil, the new formulation has already met the specification requirements for Caterpillar ECF-3 and Detroit Diesel 93K218. Rotella T also has gained Cummins CES 20081, Mack EO-O Premium Plus 2007, and Volvo VDS-4 approvals.

Shell Rotella T with Triple Protection technology is available in bulk and drums, and will be sold in quart, gallon and pail packages beginning October 15, coinciding with the national rollout of ultra-low sulfur diesel.
