Npca Seeks Manhole, Pipe Test Method For Microbial Induced Corrosion

The National Precast Concrete Association initiated a second optional ballot in support of precast manholes and pipe. Presented by NPCA’s Technical Committee and endorsed by the Board of Directors, the Secure the Future campaign will focus on raising funds to develop a standardized test method to evaluate or quantify the effects of microbial induced corrosion (MIC). MIC is an issue facing precasters in the highly competitive manhole and pipe market.

NPCA will distribute campaign contributions to the American Society of Testing and Materials, whose Subcommittee C 13.03 will oversee industry-wide, independent research. MIC testing will take place over a one to two-year time period at Michigan State University. Results will be compiled for release two to three years following testing. NPCA encourages producers with a stake in manhole and pipe markets to pledge ballot units for the research. Ballot units are $100 per share and can be obtained at the association Web site, www.precast.org./ballot.
