Toledo, Ohio-based Owens Corning, a supplier of insulation and related products and systems for residential and commercial buildings, has been named the newest Innovation Partner of AltusGroup, Inc., Baltimore, developer of CarbonCast precast technology. Initially, AltusGroup intends to explore the use of Pinkcore extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid foam insulation, which typically is positioned between the inner and outer wythes of CarbonCast insulated wall panels and behind the concrete faces of CarbonCast architectural panels.
As part of the AltusGroup industry technology partnering effort, Owens Corning will contribute to innovations in the use of carbon fiber reinforcing to improve strength, lower weight and reduce corrosion in precast components. The company will also have access to co-marketing opportunities at industry events, AltusGroup educational sessions, and advertising in trade publications.
During the past year, AltusGroup has welcomed Gate Precast and Heldenfels Enterprises, Inc. as Producer Members Û companies licensed to manufacture select CarbonCast products in particular localities Û and Degussa Admixtures, Sika Corp. and JVI as Innovation Partners Û technology suppliers who contribute to the improvement of precast performance.
Since CarbonCast’s mid-2004 introduction, 6 million-plus square feet of product have been erected or sold, AltusGroup representatives note, and projects that will entail millions more square feet are in development. CarbonCast uses C-Grid, a resin-bonded carbon fiber grid (supplied by TechFab, LLC of Anderson, S.C.), as a secondary reinforcement to replace steel mesh and shear trusses in precast concrete products such as architectural cladding, insulated sandwich wall panels, hardwall panels, and double tees. C-Grid is said by developers to have over five times the tensile strength of steel.
