Forrester Construction Co. has been selected general contractor and construction manager by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) to build a green roof on its headquarters building in downtown Washington, D.C. Following a late-December start, construction of the Society’s 3,300-sq.-ft. green roof located at 636 Eye Street, N.W., is expected to be completed this spring, with a dedication ceremony scheduled for Earth Day, April 22.

Forrester’s appreciation of landscape architecture and demonstrated commitment to sustainability were key factors in its selection to construct ASLA’s green roof, notes ASLA Executive Vice President Nancy Somerville. Forrester Construction principal D. Scott Forrester adds, We believe this green roof will serve as a demonstration project for the region and for the landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, and construction professions. Our company is committed to sustainable construction practices, and we have a great deal of experience in working on [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] LEED-certified projects.

Landscape architect and lead designer for the green-roof project is Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates, Inc., of New York; Conservation Design Forum is the consulting landscape architect; and, the architect is DMJM. A roof substantially covered with vegetation constitutes a green roof. In Europe, over 100 million square feet of planted roofs today reflect a trend growing since the 1970s. Increasingly, U.S. building owners Û faced with soaring and unpredictable energy costs and the desire for higher performance buildings Û are opting for green roof technology.
