With an eye toward truly monolithic floors, a New Zealand company, Canzac Ltd., has announced the Joint Free Slab flooring system, which uses a clip-together grid of plastic crack inducers spaced at 3-ft. 5-in. centers on the subgrade. Unlike traditional slabs on grade that feature formed and sawn shrinkage-control joints, the joint-free slab incorporates a crack inducer, which promotes a closely spaced network of fine cracks throughout the slab area, thereby dissipating the effects of shrinkage rather than accumulating and concentrating all shrinkage strain at control joints. As the grid is assembled on site, tubes fit snugly into four-way junctions that double as bar-chairs. Medium compressive-strength concretes, including those dosed with superplasticizers, are suitable for the system.
