Texas’ Sundeck of San Antonio took the WOW! Award, best overall project, for Mission Concepcion Park. A 7,000-sq.-ft. area of the San Antonio park received a combination of sandblasting and stain to create the intricate, swirled design that mimics the swirls and eddies of the San Antonio River. The surface needed to be durable enough to hold up under significant bike and foot traffic. The acid stain was applied first, followed by months of using a needle scaler to remove the surface of the concrete. The transformation to stained and exposed concrete pavement presents a fitting contrast between liquid nature and solid infrastructure.

The competition is divided among mostly cast-in-place categories: Stamped, Polished or Special Finishes, Over and Under 5,000 sq. ft.; Overlays; Countertops; Vertical Applications; Artistry; Stained; and, Decorative Environmental. The 2018 competition is opened to entries by visiting www.ascconline.org or contacting ASCC in St. Louis, 866/788-2722.
