Waukesha, Wis.-based Spancrete has named Per Faivre director of Construction Services, where he will focus on implementing the producer’s commitment to increasing value for customers and maximizing efficiency through all phases of the precast project. Faivre will oversee and direct project managers, superintendents, erection crews, subcontractors and related services. A civil engineer with a degree from the University of Illinois, Faivre previously worked as the precast division leader at Area Erectors, Inc., based in Rockford, Ill.
New Jersey’s Anchor Concrete Products (Anchor), a division of Oldcastle APG, has entered an agreement to incorporate Carbon-Cure Technologies’ carbon dioxide-based curing method for concrete masonry units. Readily deployed in production line retrofits, the technology chemically converts waste CO2 into limestone to make stronger, greener concrete products, and is currently available for blocks, pavers and segmental retaining walls.
Under the agreement, Anchor Concrete will install CarbonCure’s retrofit technology in its New Jersey flagship plant, and have the capability of extending the process to operations serving markets from Boston to Washington, D.C. The Anchor deal expands Carbon-Cure’s relationship with Oldcastle APG, which in mid-2013 adopted the CO2 curing method at its Illinois platform, Northfield Block.
CarbonCure’s process propels Anchor to a leadership position in North America in environmental concrete innovation, clearly differentiating them from competitors in the marketplace. “[It] positions our company to respond to the rapidly growing demand for greener building materials,” says Oldcastle APG–Northeast Region Chief Operating Officer Matt Lynch.

Cemstone in Mendota Heights, Minn., has named Jacob Gave, P.E., civil engineered sales representative. A Minnesota native, he began his career as a Design Engineer for Washington County Public Works and was active in the North Central Institute of Transportation Engineers, where he chaired Geometric Design Committee. Gave earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineer with a minor in Construction Management from the University of Minnesota and became a licensed professional engineer in 2011.
The American Society of Concrete Contractors will hold its 22nd Concrete Executive Leadership Forum July 17-20 at La Posada de Santa Fe in Santa Fe, N.M. The Forum is a leadership and management conference for concrete contractors. Participants include CEOs, presidents, owners, CFOs, vice presidents and other executives of general and specialty concrete contracting firms.
The event includes seminars, roundtable discussions, a golf tournament and other activities. Speakers for 2014 include social media expert Crystal Washington, former U.S. assistant secretary of health and human services Ben Sasse, construction-industry economist Anirban Basu, and attorney Ben Tymann.
The Tilt-Up Concrete Association has announced winners in the eighth annual Alphonse J. Engelman Safety Awards Program, named after a TCA past president and board member, and long-time industry supporter. The program recognizes companies in three categories: Best Tilt-Up Safety Achievement Award/General Contractors, E.E. Reed Construction, L.P. in Sugar Land, Texas, and The Korte Co. in St. Louis, Mo.; Best Tilt-Up Safety Achievement Award/Tilt-Up Contractors, Hakanson Construction in Brea, Calif., and Keystone Concrete Placement in Houston; Most Improved Safety Achievement Award, Divcon Inc. in Spokane, Wash.; and, Zero Lost Time Accident Achievement Award, AML, Inc., Arch-Con Corp., B.D. The California Construction & Industrial Materials Association has honored Lehigh Hanson’s Paso Robles operation, San Luis Obispo County, in the Ready Mixed
Concrete Plant category of the 2013 CalCIMA Excellence in Safety Awards program. Lehigh Hanson, Calaveras Materials and TXI Riverside sites were named in aggregate
and cement plant categories.
“These awards recognize plants that have taken significant steps to create safer workplaces, [and] the team effort from workers, supervisors, and management to allow for innovations, processes, and communication to improve workplace safety,” says CalCIMA President Gary Hambly.
“The CalCIMA Excellence in Safety Award is unique in that it goes beyond numbers and seeks to find changes in culture, engineering, and procedures to learn where plants are adapting and changing to improve safety,” adds CalCIMA Safety & Health Committee Co-Chair Mike Herges (Graniterock).

The University of California, Los Angeles Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has recognized Edward Rice, founder of Cypress, Calif.-based CTS Cement Manufacturing Corp., as Lifetime Contributor.
The award highlights contributions that help the school maintain its standards of excellence in engineering education, research and public services. Along with his wife, Linda, Rice has been involved bestowing gifts to benefit the students, including the creation of the Edward K. Rice Conference Room in Boelter Hall, several scholarships, and the Edward K. and Linda L. Rice Term Chair in Materials Science. In addition, the Edward K. Rice Outstanding Student Awards were created to recognize young innovators in the engineering program at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels.
The Lifetime Contributor Award was presented in a ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hilton. “Witnessing the growth of not only the university but the young students pursuing the engineering field has been a rewarding accomplishment,” said Rice. “I am proud to be a part of the continued success and innovation UCLA provides for these future engineering professionals.”
Rice holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from UCLA, where he was a School of Engineering professor and served as a Materials Science and Engineering adjunct professor.

Prior to joining Dayton Superior, Viens served as president/general manager for Morgan Advanced Materials / Molten Metal Systems, where he led the global companies manufacturing of engineered consumables and advanced materials/ceramics. Preceding his executive role at Morgan, Viens held several key operational leadership roles, including 13 years with Emerson Electric. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Technology from Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey and an EMBA in Marketing from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey – Newark. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corp. He also holds a Lean Manufacturing Certification, is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a LEED AP.

Mike Rhoda, a construction and industrial equipment executive with extensive international experience in marketing, operations, product development and sales, has been named chief executive officer of Sany America Inc., Peachtree City, Ga. As successor to Tim Frank, he has overall responsibility for manufacturing, sales, marketing and support for all Sany equipment products in North America and Central America.
Rhoda joins Sany America after serving as Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment chief technology officer; Volvo Construction Equipment vice president of product development, and excavator business line chief executive officer; and senior management positions at Ingersoll Rand.
Seattle-based fleet management technology provider Zonar has promoted Fred Fakkema to vice president of Compliance and Tony Bezilla to vice president of Product Management.
With over 25 years of transportation compliance experience, Fakkema will ensure his division delivers solutions to meet the ever-changing regulatory requirements in the marketplace. He will also facilitate relations with the enforcement community and act as a liaison to governmental entities for Zonar, which he joined in 2010 after a 25-year career with the Washington State Patrol, where he commanded the WSP Academy, Government and Relations Division and the Commercial Vehicle Division.
Bezilla will lead Zonar’s innovation and product development efforts to continually meet the needs of customers today and tomorrow, and define product strategy to ensure the best possible user experience and value. His 20-year career in information technology spans industries ranging from higher education to transportation and technology services. Prior to joining Zonar, Bezilla served as vice president of Global IT Delivery for leading school bus contractor, FirstGroup.
