The American Concrete Institute has presented its Construction Award to N.J. Gardner, FACI, University of Ottawa, and Luc Monette of HP Engineering Inc., Ottawa, for their work in parametric analysis evaluation of flat plates constructed using a single level of shores and multiple levels of elastic reshores.

Separately, ACI Certification Awards have been presented to William Elderton, retired Soils and Concrete Team manager for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; Laval University (Quebec City) Professor Marc Jolin, FACI; and GCP Applied Technologies’ G. Terry Harris, Sr., FACI. The award honors service in developing, promoting, supporting and delivering ACI Certification programs.

Katharine Morgan has assumed the role of president for ASTM International, one of the world’s largest standards development organizations. She will lead a team that supports thousands of members, customers, partners, and other stakeholders worldwide, and succeeds James Thomas, who held the post for 25 years.

“We will build on the legacy of Jim Thomas, attracting even more of the world’s top technical experts to our committees while also serving people and organizations that rely on our standards and services,” she told members gathered in Norfolk, Va., for ASTM’s first major 2017 meeting.

Morgan was joined by ASTM International Chairman Thomas Marsh (Centrotrade), who noted: “Kathie brings proven leadership skills, a deep understanding of the global standards community, a passion for ASTM International’s mission, and much more.”

Morgan is a 33-year veteran of ASTM and took the helm after two years as executive vice president. Prior to that, she was vice president of Technical Committee Operations, leading a 50-member team that supports the volunteer work of the Society’s 30,000 members worldwide. Morgan is one of the world’s most prominent voices on standardization-related issues. She is a member or director of the American National Standards Institute, Council of Engineering and Scientific Executives, International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization, Society for Standards Professionals, and American Society of Association Executives.

Ruth Lehmann

Ruth Lehmann, P.E., LEED Green Associate, has been named executive director of Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute West, serving California and Nevada. She brings more than 20 years of experience as a professional engineer and manager with expertise in transportation and materials engineering, most recently serving as senior construction support manager with Los Angeles-based DR Consultants & Designers, Inc. Lehmann will represent the precast/prestressed concrete industry in the PCI West states by liaising with construction managers, architects, transportation department officials, engineers, general contractors and academia.

Notes PCI West President Bob Clark (Clark Pacific), “Ruth’s degrees in architecture and civil engineering, along with her experience in transportation, and her collegial personality will help her effectively communicate with owners and design teams who can benefit from the kinds of integrated solutions that precast systems bring to complex design and construction projects.”

Drew Burns has joined the Slag Cement Association as marketing coordinator, tasked with supporting member companies through positive, informative and regular marketing communications. “As designers, specifiers, and transportation officials recognize the durability and sustainability benefits of slag cement, our association is accelerating efforts to increase educational outreach and build awareness throughout the concrete industry,” says SCA President Ed Griffith, citing Burns’ potential “to champion these efforts, develop new strategies to build our brand awareness, and disseminate the many benefits of using slag cement.”

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association has announced the inaugural class of the TCA College of Fellows, established last year to honor recipients’ service to the association on behalf of the industry. The College of Fellows cultivates awareness for the community of professionals dedicated to the TCA mission, and elevates the service of its members to the entire industry. Fellows establish this service through their organization’s commitment to membership and participation, and are elected by a jury of peers.
