Denver-based Summit Materials, Inc. will broaden its Rocky Mountain and South Central regions’ ready mixed concrete, aggregate and asphalt market footprint with the acquisition of Everist Materials LLC in Silverthorne, Colo., and Razorback Concrete Co. in West Memphis, Ark.

Scheduled for closing this month, the transactions enable Summit to expand its integrated, materials-based model in growing markets, notes CEO Tom Hill. “Both companies bring proven operations, high-caliber assets and long-established customer relationships that provide an ideal entry point into early-cycle markets where we see long-term potential for profitable growth,” he says. “As one of the largest suppliers of aggregates, ready-mixed concrete and asphalt in west-central Colorado, Everist will significantly expand our existing [Kilgore] operations in the region to include markets bordering Denver … where a combination of transportation infrastructure projects along the I-70 corridor and robust private construction spending activity stand to benefit our business in the years ahead.”

“Razorback is an aggregates-based business with the largest ready mixed concrete operations in central and northeastern Arkansas, representing a new regional market for Summit,” Hill observes. Given the proximity of Razorback ready mixed plants to the Memphis terminal of Summit’s Continental Cement business, he adds, “The acquisition is consistent with our long-term strategy to develop materials-based positions in select markets along the Mississippi River. We believe the Arkansas market is poised for higher construction activity levels over the longer term, driven by positive employment and population trends, and increased public infrastructure spending.”

Everist Materials has seven sites, four with ready mixed concrete. Razorback Concrete has 18 ready mixed plants and five Razorrock operations. The producers net Summit Materials more than 100 million tons of aggregate reserves, along with their extensive network of vertically integrated concrete and asphalt plants serving public and private end-markets.

Danielle Harris

The American Concrete Institute has promoted Danielle Harris to international marketing coordinator following five years of coordinating marketing and social media efforts. She will be responsible for conducting research to confirm existing international markets; identifying new markets and trends; coordinating development of plans for each international region; initiating marketing plan implementation by region; and, identifying opportunities to further engage with concrete professionals in various global regions.

“As ACI accelerates efforts to connect with individuals and organizations around the world, Danielle will leverage industry experience and marketing acumen to champion development of campaigns, programs, and materials tailored to the needs and technology in regions worldwide,” says ACI Executive Vice President Ronald Burg, P.E.

James D. Pitcock, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Houston-based Williams Brothers Construction Co., was awarded the American Concrete Pavement Association’s 2016 Hartmann-Hirschman-Egan Award. It recognizes his leadership in the transportation construction industry and as one of the country’s largest concrete paving contractors.

Williams Brothers often places more than 2 million square yards of pavement annually, and under Pitcock’s leadership, has earned what ACPA notes is a reputation for consistently setting and achieving high standards for production, efficiency and quality. His vision for the future has also resulted in Williams Brothers operating one of the largest recycled concrete operations in the United States, demonstrating both a commitment and proficiency in sustainable construction practices long before they were in vogue. Among his achievements, he served in 1976 at the request of President Gerald Ford as a National Transportation Policy Study Commission representative.

A 23-year ACPA member, Pitcock founded Williams Brothers Construction in 1955, along with Claude and John Williams. In addition to leading a successful paving and bridge construction business for six-plus decades, he has served as president of the Associated General Contractors of America and AGC Texas Highway Branch. He is a 1949 graduate of Texas A&M University, which recognized him as Distinguished Graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering and Outstanding Alumnus of the Dwight Look College of Engineering.

Vulcan Materials Corporate Manager of Technical Services Robin Graves has received the Katharine and Bryant Mather Award for advancing concrete technology through leadership roles in ASTM International C09 Committee on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. The award is named for longtime C09 member Bryant Mather, whose extended Vicksburg District tenure positioned him among the top cement and concrete authorities in the Army Corps of Engineers’ history.

A 25-year ASTM member, Graves has also received the C09 Subcommittee Chairman Award in 2009 and C07 Committee on Lime and Limestone Award of Appreciation in 2012. He is presently C09 vice chairman and C07 chairman, and has also served on the ASTM board and Committee on Technical Committee Operations.

At Vulcan Materials he was previously senior materials engineer, and arrived at the Birmingham, Ala., producer following National Aggregates Association and Chemical Lime Co. tours of duty. He holds B.S. degrees in Geology and Computer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology and Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. Along with ASTM, Graves is a member of the American Concrete Institute and Transportation Research Board.

Separately, Forterra Building Products Vice President of Technical Marketing, North America Oliver S. Delery Jr., P.E, will serve a three-year term on the ASTM International board of directors. Based in New Orleans, Delery has been with Forterra and predecessor Hanson Building Products since 2002, previously serving as New Orleans Cement Products president and Choctaw Inc. Gulf Coast vice president. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Tulane University and is a licensed civil engineer in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

A member of ASTM since 1982, Delery is the past chairman of ASTM C13 Committee on Concrete Pipe and American Concrete Pipe Association. C13 presented him the Robert R. Litehiser Award in 2000, and the Award of Merit (and accompanying title of fellow) in 2013 for his leadership and contributions to concrete pipe standards development. Outside ASTM, Delery is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Louisiana Engineering Society, American Public Works Association, and National Society of Professional Engineers.

Delery joins a 25-member board—representing a broad variety of companies, associations and government bodies worldwide—to be chaired in 2017 by D. Thomas Marsh, president and CEO of Centrotrade Minerals and Metals Inc. in Chesapeake, Va. “As part of a multinational with operations in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, I see first hand the importance of ASTM’s global reach and how its standards support supply chains,” says Marsh.

At the helm of Centrograde Minerals and Metals since 1999, he directs day-to-day operations, provides technical, regulatory and standards organization oversight to sister groups in Europe and Asia. An ASTM International member since 1990, Marsh serves as chairman of D11 Committee on Rubber and Rubber-like Materials, and is a member of F08 Committee on Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces, and Facilities, and F23 Committee on Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment. He served on the ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations from 2007 to 2009.

The International Concrete Repair Institute has named 2017 officers: President– Brian Daley of C.A. Lindman of South Florida, LLC; President-Elect–Ralph Jones of Structural Engineering Associates; Vice President–Chris Lippmann of Kenseal Construction Products Corp.; Secretary–Mark LeMay of JQ Engineering LLP; Treasurer–Scott Greenhaus of Structural; and, Immediate Past-President–Keith Harrison of Capital Restoration & Waterproofing.

Middle market private equity specialist Sterling Group, Houston, has acquired Stetson Building Products, Inc., a management owned construction supply distributor with nine branches and distribution center in the Midwest. Iowa-based Stetson is the third business assimilated into concrete and masonry contractor-geared Construction Supply Holdings, formed in November 2016 after Sterling closed two charter acquisitions, Brock White Co. LLC, St. Paul, Minn., and Border Construction Specialties LLC, Phoenix.

Construction Supply Holdings is positioned as a leading distributor of construction materials, accessories and tools, with 48 branches, 750 employees, and 70,000-plus stock keeping units for nearly 25,000 customers. Brock White and Border have strong branch footprints in the Upper Midwest, Southwest and Western Canada. Stetson expands Construction Supply Holdings’ Midwest presence and adds technical expertise in the reinforcing steel fabrication and concrete form rental categories.

Brad Shipley has joined the Hamilton Kent engineering team as a product manager, responsible for customer technical support; research and evaluation of new product designs; and, client quote submittal. He has 10 years of experience in design and engineering of piping systems across oil and gas, nuclear power, and mining industries. His design roles include pipe stress analysis, hydraulic analysis, and materials selection.

Separately, Dominique Wong joined the Hamilton Kent sales team as business development manager, responsible for growing the Lifespan System product line; promoting the manufacturer’s message about watertight infrastructure; and, the Ontario market territory. A professional engineer, he has managed various projects for Aastra Telecom, a global leader in enterprise communications technology; S.A. Armstrong, an innovator in fluid flow HVAC systems for commercial buildings; and, Consolidated Energy Solutions, a leader in grocery-grade HVAC systems. 

East Manufacturing in Randolph, Ohio, has appointed Chuck Stephens as western sales representative, overseeing dealer sales for flatbed, drop deck, dump and refuse trailers plus dump bodies. Stephens will now cover the United States west of the Mississippi River, a territory he held from 1995 to 2001. Stephens originally joined East in 1980 as a sales trainee, serving direct trailer sales in Ohio.

Hilti North America President and CEO Cary Evert will retire at the end of March, closing a nearly four-decade career during which he has held nine roles, including three international assignments. “I have seen Hilti develop into a leader in the North American construction market and look forward to watching Hilti North America continue to grow under the leadership of [successor] Avi Kahn,” notes Evert, who joined the Tulsa., Okla., company in 1980 and has been at the helm since 2005.

Kahn transitioned to his new role in January after serving as Hilti Canada general manager for nearly six years. He has progressed through the ranks since starting in 2004 as a territory sales representative for construction in San Francisco, and from there was appointed to regional manager in San Diego and Hawaii, then Chicago-based West Great Lakes division manager.

Martina McIsaac has succeeded Kahn, transitioning from her post as division manager for the greater Toronto area while joining the Hilti North America executive management team. She arrived at Hilti Canada in 2013 as a senior manager candidate and was appointed division manager the following year.

Kim Running has taken a stake alongside Todd Scharich in Michigan-based Decorative Concrete Resources, which supplies materials and provides education and technical support to ready mixed producers, contractors and design/build professionals. She continues as a business manager, based in Saginaw, and is credited for her valued role in customer supply chains.
