The EPA Center for Corporate Climate Leadership named the third annual Climate Leadership Award winners at a conference in San Diego late last month, honoring 15 organizations and two individuals in the public and private sectors for carbon pollution reduction efforts. Mack Trucks received the Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management—Goal Achievement Award for:

  • Establishing a second goal under EPA’s former Climate Leaders program in 2008 by pledging to achieve a 12 percent intensity reduction (per unit produced) from 2007 to 2012.
  • Achieving and exceeding its goal a year early by lowering greenhouse gas intensity 43.2 percent, equivalent to an absolute 17.4 percent reduction.
  • Achieving its most recent goal by implementing a comprehensive lighting mitigation strategy for manufacturing plants and office areas, utilizing building automation systems, and replacing fuel oil-fired boilers with high-efficiency natural gas-fired hot water heaters, reducing natural gas usage by 43 percent.

Mack Trucks’ current goal was preceded by its first goal achievement: a 32 percent decrease in greenhouse gas intensity per unit produced from 2003 to 2007. The national awards program recognizes and incentivizes exemplary corporate, organizational, and individual leadership in response to climate change. Award recipients represent a wide array of industries, including finance, manufacturing, retail, technology, higher education and local government. EPA sponsors the Climate Leadership Awards in partnership with the Association of Climate Change Officers, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and Climate Registry.
