Green Concrete Council Adds Reference Guide

Source: U.S. Green Concrete Council (USGCC), Farmington Hills, Mich.

Detailing various concrete products’ and building methods’ specific benefits, “The Sustainable Concrete Guide – Applications” is a new companion to USGCC’s “The Sustainable Concrete Guide—Strategies and Examples” benchmark. Announced at 2010 Greenbuild, the former title offers tips and case studies on specifying concrete materials, constructing for sustainability, integrating into sustainable structures, and navigating green codes and standards.

The guide is divided into Materials, Construction, Applications, Concrete in Sustainable Structures, and Codes parts, with 28 chapters in all. Author Andrea Schokker, professor and head of the civil engineering department at the University of Minnesota Duluth, is an American Concrete Institute board member and chairs ACI Committee 130, Sustainability of Concrete. “The transformation toward sustainable development provides the concrete industry with a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to inform stakeholders about our material’s ability to enhance [and] protect our planet,” she affirms.

Assisting in “Applications” were members of an editorial review panel, including USGCC founding president and past ACI president Florian Barth; Cemstone Products’ Kevin MacDonald, vice president of engineering services; Titan America CEO and 2010-11 Portland Cement Association Chairman Aris Papadopoulos; and, Turner Construction’s Michael Deane, vice president and chief sustainability officer.

“The Sustainable Concrete Guide – Applications” ($85) is available through ACI, www.concrete.org. Additional information on USGCC can be obtained by visiting  www.USGreenConcreteCouncil.com.
