Concrete Product Category Rule revisions open to comment

Sources: National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Silver Spring, Md.; CP staff

Environmental auditor NSF International is accepting comments through July 27 on revisions to NRMCA’s charter Product Category Rule (PCR), issued in 2013 to support Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) covering concrete mix designs. Over the past 18 months, the association has collaborated with the University of Washington-hosted Carbon Leadership Forum plus other stakeholders to draft a revised Concrete PCR reflecting changes in industry practices and international standards.

PCR define criteria for an EPD, demand for which has escalated throughout construction specifications owing to incentives in the U.S. Green Building Council’s emerging LEED v4 rating system. The NSF National Center for Sustainability Standards is managing the public comment phase of the revised Concrete PCR. Public comment and consensus measures behind the rule abide requirements of Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization and its standard, ISO/TS 14027:2017 Environmental labels and declarations — Development of product category rules.

The Concrete PCR draft anf files for submitting comments are posted here.
