SCHWING AMERICA

DRUM CONTROL, 36M PUMP

The Schwing-Stetter Mixer Automatic Revolution Technology (SMART) Drum technology combines the benefits of constant drum speed with a control system company engineers estimate can save up to 80 percent in drum wear by optimizing rpm.

Smart Drum automatically maintains optimum drum rpm, relieving operators of the need to activate a constant speed device. In loading or discharge modes, operators control drum rpm. Over the road, after the truck has reached a pre-set threshold speed, a cab-mounted light indicates Smart Drum engagement, with drum control kept independent of engine speed. Using industry trip and distance averages, the technology extends the life of the drum to as much as 10.5 years, company engineers contend. Other system benefits, they add, include improved mix quality; enhanced stability owing to the center of gravity held constant; and, less horsepower draw with resulting fuel savings from fewer drum rotations.

Separately, Schwing has unveiled the S 36 SX concrete pump with RZ4 Boom. The four-section RZ4 combines what company engineers note are the best features of two boom types, Roll and Fold and Z tip, and enables placement at distances exceeding 118-feet vertically and 104-feet horizontally.

The RZ4 boom benefits from the Roll and Fold design with the added advantage of a 270-degree Z fold tip section, the manufacturer notes. As the boom unfolds, it straightens itself, keeping the pipeline close to the boom, and allowing the use of shorter pipe arm holders for a narrower profile. The new model also incorporates Super X Outriggers for fat set-up and extended horizontal reach. The curved front outriggers telescope out and around obstacles while providing a compact and stable pumping platform.

The standard Generation 3 2025-5 120/80 MPS concrete pump provides up to 178 yd./hour at 23 strokes per minute. The all-hydraulic design utilizes the Big Rock Valve, promoting maximum filling efficiency of the material cylinders even with harsh mixes. Schwing's open circuit design provides continuous hydraulic oil flow for better filtration and cooling.

ARGONICS INC.

DRUM LINER

Providing a remedy for mixer drum delamination, the company cites a departure from standard manufacturing procedure resulting in a new single-pour urethane liner called Kryptane Evolution. The liner carries a five-year or 1 million-yard warranty. If any section of the liner delaminates within the given time frame, that section will be replaced free of charge.

Company engineers report that their process avoids the lining of central mixed plant drums by pouring in layers, citing the potential presence of moisture and contaminants that lead to early delamination and reduced service life. Accordingly, the new liner is said to offer reduced labor time and cost per cubic yard of material produced.

TEREX ROADBUILDING

BRIDGE MIXER, RM PLANT

Company's first seven-axle RD7000 Rear-Discharge Transit-Mix Truck features a 29-ft. outer bridge length with six axles under the rear fender. The model delivers an 11-yd. legal concrete payload or a gross permissible weight of 76,820 lb. at 4,000 lb. per yard of mix. The RD7000 meets federal bridge standards of 77,000 lbs. at 29 ft. without the need for a trailer axle.

The truck incorporates a 12-yd. drum on a Sterling LT9500 chassis to reduce the chance for mix spillage. A new low profile mixer design results in a lower truck center of gravity for better traction and enhanced stability on site. The mixer drum's 42-in. opening affords what product engineers note are quick and efficient discharge of a wide variety of mixes. Its 3/16-in. abrasion-resistant (AR) skin with ¼-in. fins and flights, lined with dual-row rebar, offers consistent concrete mixing with long service life.

The RD7000 comes standard with a certified pressure vessel 120-psi water tank for fast clean-up. An exclusive drum wiper system keeps concrete away from drum rollers, while standard aluminum rear fenders are rust resistant and lightweight, giving operators more payload capacity. A four-point attachment with spring-loaded pedestal mounts allows the mixer mounting brackets to flex when driving over irregular terrain for longer frame service life.

The driver controls a number of functions from inside the cab: drum start-stop; mixing direction and speed; discharge chute raise/lower and position lock; air-flip hopper; working lights; and, air flip hopper position warning light. An umbilical cord remote control located toward the rear of the mixer truck controls many of the same drum functions.

In plant equipment, Terex Roadbuilding has modified its Rustler R3 transit mix model to include a three-bin option. Each aggregate bin features 12-yd. storage, with total capacity equivalent to 42 yd. — slightly larger than the two-bin configuration. Winged bolt-on bin extensions for the sides, ends and center fold inward and to the sides of the frame to eliminate “loose loads” for transport.

With “no crane” set-up and no need for concrete foundations, the 55,000-lb. Rustler R3 continues to be one of the most portable batch plants on the market and can be transported with standard “oversize” permits, company engineers contend. Even in the three-bin aggregate configuration, they add, the plant's hydraulically self-erecting, 1,600-cu.-ft. silo can be set up within 30 minutes.

All Rustler R3 plants feature an efficient and reliable water system, with the meter moved from the center of the structure to the outside frame for easier access. Repositioning the meter results in a more direct water connection to the discharge head, eliminates many of the bends and curves previously found in the piping, and reduces the pressure drop in the piping network.

Cement is channeled from the silo to the discharge head via long-life, high speed augers. The R3's batchers are directly suspended from their load cells, eliminating the inaccuracies and complications commonly associated with mechanical scale levers. For contractors requiring additional powder storage, Terex Roadbuilding offers a separate, portable R1600 silo — twin to the silo found on the R3 — so producers can store fly ash or slag.

The Rustler R3 features a discharge head whereby sand and aggregate transferred from the storage bins cascade freely, eliminating impact wear. A water ring design features multiple openings to flush the entire discharge perimeter with a 360° curtain of water, cleansing any remaining material from the discharge head.

LIEBHERR CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY

SMALL PLANT

The manufacturer has tailored the Easy-mix 1.0 model, originally developed in Europe, for North American ready mixed and precast operations. Designed for minimum transport and assembly, the plant ships in a 40-ft. container with fully integrated: 1.3-yd. ring pan mixer; four individual loader-charged aggregate bins; water pump, reservoir and batcher; and, control room and microprocessor control. A weigh module for water and cement and optional loading conveyor for truck mixer, plus cement-charging components ship separate from the container.

Once on site, the side walls of the silo elements are folded upwards or slid inside, and the aggregate can be fed immediately, typically by wheel loader. Company engineers note that the model can produce low and high slump concrete mixes at rates of 45-50 yd./hour. The container element bears on a steel foundation as standard in lieu of a separate concrete structure.

EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT

Most of the manufacturer's new core mining and industrial machines will be equipped with a remote asset management solution — EquipmentManager and Product Link. While the manufacturer has provided remote asset management as an option since 1998, these capabilities now will be delivered as an integral part of most core Caterpillar machines in U.S. and Canadian markets. Product Link will be available as an option for the remaining Caterpillar machines.

EquipmentManager/Product Link provides full-depth asset management, maintenance, and health information required by equipment managers to effectively handle their fleets, system developers note. Using key indicators from equipment such as hours, location, and diagnostic codes, plus tools such as mapping, maintenance scheduling, and troubleshooting instructions, EquipmentManager — a secure, web-based application — identifies events requiring attention and delivers information in an intelligible and actionable manner. Product Link is the hardware using satellite technology that enables information flow between on-board systems and EquipmentManager. The remote management system provides machine location and hours, as well as time and geo-fencing capabilities.

The manufacturer will begin phasing in EquipmentManager/Product Link with wheeled hydraulic excavators and articulated trucks. Remaining machines will be equipped with the system throughout 2008.www.cat.com

INDIANA PHOENIX — GLIDER PROGRAMS

Company's Standard Glider will be offered along with two programs featuring a one-year guarantee. Standard Glider Program customers furnish a donor truck, and the manufacturer disassembles the vehicle and retrieves all usable components to build a Front Discharge Glider Truck. Donor parts are inspected for defects, steam cleaned, sand blasted, and painted before assembly. The Glider Truck features an ergonomic cab and heat-treated frame rails.

The recently introduced Certified Glider Program allows customers to purchase a donor truck from another company — Indiana Phoenix has donor resources — in order to keep their own trucks in service. After disassembling the donor truck, the company reconditions the engine, transmission, rear tandem axle, front steer axle, transfer case, drum drive, and hydrostatic pump and motor. A Certified Glider is built using those certified components, the manufacturer notes, and customers receive a truck fully warranted for one year at a reported savings up to 30 percent versus a new mixer truck.

Similar to the Certified Glider, the second new offering — the Super Glider Program — adds factory-warranted, remanufactured Cummins pre-emission engines and Allison transmissions. Essentially, customers obtain a like-new truck with a one-year warranty and significant savings, company officials contend. Additionally, trade-ins on trucks or gliders are now accepted.

UNIVERSAL FLOW MONITORS

WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Benefiting mixer maintenance, concrete batch quality, and truck fleet management, the company affirms, the 2FR dual-purpose water-add/chute-washout system is designed to monitor and record water flow added to concrete batches. In addition, the system activates a flow alarm when washout occurs after a concrete pour; thus, fleet operators can use 2FR units with flow alarms in a satellite navigation system to notify dispatchers when trucks are ready for redeployment.

The system incorporates a CoolPoint vortex shedding flowmeter, providing accuracy of +/-1 percent of actual flow to meet FP-03 552.05 standards of the Federal Highway Administration. CoolPoint is a nonmechanical meter with no moving parts to stick or coat. Thus, it is not susceptible to failure due to particulate blockage nor to typical flowmeter problems, such as acid wash, meter hang-up caused by entrained dirt, and compressed air over-ranging. Moreover, system developers emphasize, 2FR's solenoid valve is more dependable than a manual valve for adding water, as a ‘fully on/fully off’ feature avoids the hazards of a partially opened manual valve that maintains flow below a rate accommodated by the flowmeter.

The 2FR water-management system can accommodate flows from 1.8 gpm to 50 gpm. The system's washout switch actuates at 2-gpm flow. Total amount of water added is indicated on a cab LCD display in a self-contained box that also holds the solenoid valve actuation button. The system includes cabling for power to truck battery, valves and the in-cab display.

WHEEL LOADERS

The new 938H wheel loader and IT38H with integrated toolcarrier linkage feature the Cat C6.6 engine with Acert technology for responsive power and low emissions, the manufacturer notes. The new engine, differential lock system, load-sensing hydraulics, and increased lift and tilt forces deliver high performance in digging and material-handling applications, product engineers add, while limiting engine emissions to meet EPA Tier 3 off-highway guidelines and worldwide standards.

New features that aid machine health monitoring and service include in-cab Messenger display, providing real-time machine performance, engine and diagnostic data; as well as the standard Cat Product Link, supplying two-way information flow between the machine and equipment dealer and to the owner's desktop computer via the online dealer storefront. Additionally, both 938H and IT38H models have a new axle with standard front differential lock, or — exclusive to the manufacturer — an optional, automatic differential lock for both front and rear, reportedly offering reduced fuel consumption and less heat in the axle with improved traction and reduced tire wear.

The 938H retains traditional Z-Bar linkage for improved bucket loading and optimum durability, the company affirms, while the IT38H features integrated toolcarrier linkage designed for expanded versatility. Parallel lift for pallet fork use and other material-handling jobs suits applications involving multiple tasks performed with one machine using a variety of work tools, such as a bucket, pallet forks, and a material handling arm.

Both new machines powered by 180-net-hp engines maintain peak power through a broader speed range as compared to previous models — about 8 percent more power at 2,100 rpm. Bucket capacities range from 3.0 to 3.9 cu. yd. for the 938H and up to 3.0 to 7.0 cu. yd. for the IT38H in low-density bulk material handling applications.

Comprising the core of patented Acert technology, the Adem A4 advanced electronic controller is said by system developers to effectively integrate and control engine operations, functioning with the common rail fuel system, smart waste gate turbocharger, and crossflow head design for precise fuel and air delivery. Further enhancing fuel economy, the loaders' Engine Idle Management System provides flexibility in managing idle speeds for specific application requirements.
