Flatwork finishes: Coating offers design options, performance
Master Builders has released a new product to raise the standard in decorative concrete coating applications. Mastertop 590 DC decorative coating is a polymer-modified cementitious system designed not only to enhance aesthetics, but also to protect new or repaired concrete, mortar and masonry. The unique spray application and color availability allows contractors to create unlimited designs and patterns to meet any aesthetic requirement.
Mastertop 590 DC decorative coating is being marketed as a system that includes the polymer-modified cementitious mortar, reinforcing tape and stencils used to create designs and patterns, water-based pigments for color enhancement and an acrylic sealer to protect the finished installation. Sold through Master Builders authorized dealers and distributors, the Mastertop 590 DC system will be installed by contractors trained in the design, installation and promotion of the system.
Released in early 1997, the Mastertop 590 DC decorative coating system has been favorably received by contractors, owners and engineers, according to the manufacturer. Typical uses include patios, pool decks and driveways in residential applications, and entrance areas, sidewalks, walkways and balconies in commercial structures. It can be used on both interior and exterior surfaces to provide enhanced aesthetics, protection from environmental influences, positive side waterproofing and damp-proofing.
"What sets Mastertop 590 apart from other decorative coating options is its versatility and consistency," said Byron Smith, group product manager for Master Builders. "This product offers a high degree of artistic intricacy and flexibility, allowing contractors to create patterns that look like brick, tile, slate, stone and other natural surfaces, while offering improved durability and protection at a fraction of the cost. And the products supplied by Master Builders are subject to rigorous quality control procedures, so final appearance will not be compromised by inferior or inconsistent product characteristics."
Installation of the new Mastertop 590 DC can reportedly be accomplished quickly and easily. Crack analysis and any required repairs to the concrete are followed by proper surface preparation. A skim-coat of the Mastertop 590 DC mortar is applied using a steel trowel to a thickness of approximately 11/48 inch. Tape and/or stencils are then placed on the surface to create patterns and designs. Subsequent coats of the Mastertop 590 DC coating are then applied using a trowel, brush or spray apparatus, depending on the texture and appearance desired. Variations in application methods and colorants added to the coating material can be combined to create surfaces rich in depth and detail. Once cured, the area is sealed.
"Average installation time for the Mastertop 590 DC coating system is one day," explained Smith. "On installations of 500 sq. ft., we've been able to complete minor repairs, surface preparation and product installation in one day." Recommended curing time is three days for foot traffic and seven days for vehicular traffic to ensure that the coating exhibits all of the desired properties of abrasion, stain and mildew resistance.
