A new program from ICC Evaluation Service Inc., Whittier, Calif., “Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation,” reviews the green features of building systems and products in nine environmental categories. Evaluation combines inspection of a manufacturer's production process and review of independent product testing, where required. Products that meet their claims of sustainability and green receive a SAVE mark and may qualify for points under LEED, Green Globes and the new National Green Building Standard rating systems.

“Building or home owners using SAVE products in green construction almost certainly achieve higher values under the three major systems,” says ICC-ES Director of Special Projects Steve Thorsell. “A SAVE report gives manufacturers proof that the sustainability of their product is verified-a significant advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”

Building products' sustainable features can include use of recycled materials or renewable resources, or reduction of hazardous emissions. Amid the green revolution, ICC-ES officials contend, competition in the construction industry increasingly requires sustainable claims verification.
