LafargeHolcim Ltd. unit Holcim Deutschland formulated a series of high performance concretes for elements lining a 3.4-kilometer tunnel housing the world’s most powerful X-ray laser. Located near Hamburg, Germany, the European XFEL generates extremely intense X-ray flashes researchers from around the world use to map atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and study the processes in the interior of planets.

NPCA seeks precast plants for Sustainability Program pilot

The NPCA Sustainability Committee plans to enlist 10 precast producers across North America to test software calculating three environmental impact factors tied to mix designs and plant operations: global warming potential, primary energy consumption and water use. The Excel-based program enables users to benchmark and track progress against baseline impact numbers.

Cemex has published an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for 12 mix designs produced at its Pier 92 plant in San Francisco, a market laden with green-building practitioners and clients who are stepping up supplier transparency requirements with the tightening of project rating systems, chief among them the EPD-incentivizing LEED v4.
