Charles Smith, chief executive officer of Johnson City, Tenn.-based General Shale, has been elected Brick Industry Association chairman, succeeding Davis Henry, president of Henry Brick Co., Selma, Ala. Prior to his 2014 appointment as CEO, Smith served as president and chief operating officer, and was credited with steering General Shale—one of the top North American operators in clay brick— through the economic downturn and revitalizing product development.

Basalite raises Rocky Mountain market stake in General Shale asset deal

Basalite has acquired Colorado Springs, Colo., and Cheyenne, Wyo., concrete block production assets—plus a retail showroom adjacent to the latter site—from Tennessee-based General Shale, best known for leadership in clay masonry. The deal extends the Rocky Mountain market presence of Basalite, which has concrete masonry production in Boise, Idaho, and Denver.

Gate Precast Co. has named industry veteran Steve Schweitzer as vice president, operations manager, at its Winchester, Ky., plant, an 18-acre site with 30,000 sq. ft. under roof. His precast industry tenure spans 36 years, most recently in the commercial sales and estimating departments at Prestress Services Industries. In addition to his work experience, he is also a member of several Precast/Presstressed Concrete Institute committees and active in PCI Central Region programs.
General Shale harvests good will
General Shale is continuing its longstanding partnership with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville by contributing 30,000 bricks for the 1,200-sq.-ft. education center at the CAC Beardsley Community Farm.
