Gate Precast turns to 3D-printed forms for ‘sugar crystal’ façade

A towering mixed-use structure with a unique façade in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood has not only changed the New York City skyline, but has shown the transformative possibilities of 3D-printed concrete formwork. Thanks to a collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, Jacksonville, Fla.-based Gate Precast Co. was able to bring the intricate design of One South First’s “sugar crystal” exterior to life as well as provide a major step forward for architectural precast.

His 30-plus years across financial disciplines include experience in accounting, tax, capital markets, corporate governance compliance, public company reporting and internal controls. Kunz most recently served as vice president, corporate controller and principal accounting officer of Tenneco Inc., where he was responsible for a team that handled all corporate and business unit accounting functions—consolidations, financial planning and analysis, and Securities and Exchange Commission reporting among them.

Two Marriott hotels near Orlando’s Mall at Millenia are being built within a single structure as part of a dual-brand hotel concept made possible, in part, by the adaptability of precast. Gate Precast will produce and install 158,841 square feet of 8-in. hollow core precast and 6,156 square feet of 8-in. solid slab structural precast for the project.
