Lehigh issues first EPD based on Cement Product Category Rule 2.0

NRMCA meets latest reporting standards in new Industry-Wide EPD

The document functions as a national proxy for the bulk of concrete in residential, commercial and public construction, and complies with the latest Product Category Rule for Concrete, released earlier this year.

Michigan-based certification authority NSF International has issued a new Product Category Rule (PCR) for Concrete, reflecting nearly two years of stakeholder-proposed updates to a charter 2013 version. The PCR is a set of industry rules to support development of environmental product declarations (EPD) for ready mixed and manufactured concrete. EPDs respond to calls for product transparency and disclosure from green building standards, market initiatives, and state laws.

Environmental auditor NSF International is accepting comments through July 27 on revisions to NRMCA’s charter Product Category Rule (PCR), issued in 2013 to support Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) covering concrete mix designs. Over the past 18 months, the association has collaborated with the University of Washington-hosted Carbon Leadership Forum plus other stakeholders to draft a revised Concrete PCR reflecting changes in industry practices and international standards.

NRMCA releases Industry-Wide Environmental Product Declaration 2.0

The second version of the NRMCA Industry-Wide (IW) Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and Benchmark (Industry Average) Report discloses production impacts of 72 concrete mixes with 2,500–8,000 psi design strength, covering the bulk of product used in residential, commercial and public construction. The updated IW EPD is prepared from 88 producers operating 2,500 ready mixed plants, and includes a wide range of mix designs for each strength class, from 100 percent portland cement mixes to those with 50-plus percent fly ash or slag cement factor.

Martin Marietta inaugurates NRMCA system level Environmental Product Declaration

Martin Marietta Materials is the first producer member to use NRMCA’s new system level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verification program, oriented to transparency credits in LEED v4 and other green building standards. The program meets strict international standards, but streamlines EPD verification: Rather than a fixed set of product-specific EPD, it verifies the software used to generate a concrete mix’s environmental impacts. Hence, producers can tender new product-specific EPD as needed for each project.
