ASTM Committee C09 observes centennial in Toronto

Ontario mainstay St Marys CBM dispatched its 1939 International D-40-mounted mixer, with six-cylinder, 89-hp engine and 1.6-yd. Rex drum, to the Sheraton Centre Toronto, where C09 members commenced committee centennial observances.A group of 150 members and stakeholders commemorated ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates’ 100th anniversary amid recent committee week activities in Toronto. Chairman Steve Parker (Chryso Inc.) and past chairs Doug Hooton (University of Toronto) and Tony Fiorato (PCA, CTL, Slag Cement Association) weighed in on Committee C09’s progress, credibility and vast influence on concrete practice.

Cemex anchors TCA convention demonstration

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association’s annual convention, presented by Meadow Burke September 29–October 1 in San Jose, Calif., will feature educational opportunities for contractors, engineers, architects, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, educators and developers from across the globe, plus an outdoor demonstration from Bradley Concrete, Cemex and Hub Construction Specialties.

Ernest Maier has added the CarbonCure technology to its Maryland concrete masonry operation, and is poised to be the first Washington, D.C., market operator to issue Environmental Product Declarations and Health Product Declarations for block. An EPD covering CMU processed with a carbon dioxide-based curing system will time with the ongoing implementation of the District of Columbia’s Green Building Act, the first local law requiring new, private buildings to meet LEED rating system standards. EPD will especially factor into projects for which certification under the new LEED v4 is targeted.

ORGANIZATIONS - August 2014

ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement presented the Award of Merit to David Norris, assistant plant manager at Riverside Cement, Oro Grande, Calif., citing his technical and administrative contributions to the industry, especially in hydraulic cement standards development. The award is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

Command Alkon Conference returns to the Big Easy

Command-IIThe Command Alkon Training & Technology Conference will be held at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, November 12-13. The annual event is one of the industry’s largest information technology- and plant equipment-focused gatherings for ready mixed, manufactured concrete, cement, aggregate and asphalt producers. Participation in the conference continues to rise, Command Alkon officials note, with the unveiling of new technologies, such as MOBILE series computing applications; previews of the latest releases of core products; and, opportunities for users to network with peer producers and gain industry perspective.
