Building Safety Month theme: 'Codes Save Lives'

The authority overseeing the widely adopted International Building and International Residential Codes is ramping up promotion of the 38th annual Building Safety Month with an unmistakable message: "Building Codes Save Lives." The ICC-led, international campaign is celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during the month of May and raises awareness about building safety and the importance of current safety codes and code officials' role in creating safe, sustainable structures that communities can rely on for generations.

Now in its 55th year, the PCI Design Awards program recognizes 21 projects across parking structure, building and transportation categories. This year saw 100-plus entries from producers, engineers, and architects across North America.

CO2-cured concrete developer secures matrix bonding element patent

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recognizes the unique structure of Solidia Concrete, designed and produced with conventional aggregates and processes, but bearing an alternative to hydraulic binders that reacts with carbon dioxide versus water. U.S. Patent No. 9,868,667, "Bonding Element, Bonding Matrix and Composite Material Having the Bonding Element and Method of Manufacturing Thereof," covers the composition of matter of the distinctive, non-hydraulic, CO2-cured concrete available as Solidia Concrete.

Genest Concrete’s Comfort Block warmly received at NAHB show

An insulated concrete masonry wall system, with block placed on adhesive or thin set mortar, was among Best of IBS Awards/Most Innovative Building Products category finalists spotlighted during the NAHB’s International Builders’ Show. Developed by Maine building and hardscape unit producer Genest Concrete, Comfort Block is offered in two- and four-piece versions, CB-8 and CB-16, for 8- or 16-in. thick walls.
