Valdosta Lowndes County Development Authority directors have approved an agreement under which Bates Precast Concrete, Inc. will invest up to $5 million in a new Lake Park Industrial Park office and production facility, increasing drainage and utility structure offerings from a present 6.4-acre Lake Park, Ga. site.
“This expansion will make it possible for Bates Precast to provide more jobs and better benefits for existing employees, as well as continuing to provide quality products for airports, roads, schools, and backyards,” says President Sharie Bates Elliott. Work is scheduled to begin by year end on the new operation, she adds, resulting in the addition of production crews plus new engineer, estimator, draftsperson and sales positions.

CEMEX VENTURES, HILTI OPEN STARTUP COMPETITION
“You are the missing piece” is the theme of a worldwide competition for new entities or business plan proposals addressing five areas of construction value chain opportunity: Smart and sustainable cities and buildings; digital solutions for project and jobsite management; supply chain management; innovative materials or methods; and, optimization of productivity, efficiency and quality in daily project management.
Joining Cemex Ventures and Hilti Group as 2020 Construction Startup Competition hosts are global peers Ferrovial Corp. of Madrid, infrastructure operator; Leonard, a foresight platform under contractor Vinci Group of Paris; and Nova, the external ventures business of Saint-Gobain Group, also of Paris. Their positions in the construction value chain provide participants with wide visibility of the challenges the industry faces, as well as access to an active portfolio of important contacts. These factors help build connections to new investors and companies focused on innovation. Moreover, the competition offers participants the possibility of testing and implementing their solutions with any of the five hosts.
The 2020 Construction Startup Competition aims to complete a vision of emerging solutions in the industry, facilitate an efficient review of investment opportunities, and create a community of players committed to solving the industry’s challenges from an innovative, technological, and sustainable point of view. Cemex Ventures has launched a portal, www.cemexventures.com/startup-competition-2020, through which additional participation details can be obtained and proposals submitted throughout July. Host representatives will engage the most promising startups with a further set of actions, from workshops to pilots or investments. Construction Startup Competition finalists will be invited to Chicago for December 2-3 presentations to a group of global leaders in innovation, investment, and construction.
