Mar-Bal Inc. recently acquired the AlertTile and RediMat assets, and is bringing the brands under the Detectable Warning Systems umbrella as part of its family of proprietary products for the construction, electrical, appliance and safety businesses. In anticipation of an aggressive DWS growth trajectory, the company has increased capacity at its Ohio, Missouri and Virginia plants.
“The DWS line represents a radical change so product development and manufacturing technology will play a key role,” observes Vice President of Product Engineering and Manufacturing Technology Vince Profeta. “Investments in new equipment were made to ensure on-time and just-in-time [production]. These include 1,000- and 500-ton compression presses, robotics, and secondary equipment. Additionally, we are increasing warehousing space to hold all inventory, and make sure systems are in place to ship quickly to our expanding customer bases.”
The pavement warning system market is driven by an aging population, he adds, including 40 million people with disabilities—10 million of whom are blind or visually impaired. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 has fueled innovation through Accessibility Guidelines for Detectable Warning Surfaces requirements for hazardous vehicle ways, transit platform edges, reflecting pools, plus curb and wheelchair ramps.
Dubbed truncated domes, detectable warning surfaces are tactile indicators or pavers that provide ‘cues’ to persons with vision impairments, alerting them that they’re walking into a hazardous vehicular area or change of grade. Such products comprise the broad scope of the DWS line, billed as one of the most complete offerings of ADA-compliant tactile warning surfaces. Mar-Bal promotes both composite and flexible materials for either cast-in-place or surface applications: RediMat, flexible, glass-filled polyurethane on existing pavement; AlertTile, surface applied, rigid composite, truncated domes; AlertCast, cast-in-place, rigid composite; and, Cast Iron, premium gray iron detectable warning plate designed for use in cold, harsh climates. — Mar-Bal Inc., Chagrin Falls, Ohio, 440/543-75226; www.detectable-warning.com
