Lehigh Mitchell mill garners Indiana Century Award

Lehigh Cement Company LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lehigh Hanson, Inc., was presented the Governor’s Century Business Award, which honors Indiana businesses that have remained in operation for at least 100 years and demonstrated a commitment to community service. Governor Eric Holcomb recognized the Lehigh Mitchell plant and company officials during an early-April award ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis.
Governor Eric Holcomb presented the Century Business Award to Mitchell Plant Manager Jerry Miller, joined by Lehigh Hanson Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Tom Chizmadia and Indiana Economic Development Corporation President Elaine Bedel.

“Lehigh’s rich history in Indiana, along with its dedicated and hard-working employees, is the reason the company stays successful,” said Lehigh Hanson Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Communications Tom Chizmadia. “Governor Holcomb is committed to Indiana businesses. By honoring companies both large and small, he continues to support Hoosiers and strengthen Indiana’s workforce.”

Lehigh Cement has always worked to sustain positive relationships with the Mitchell community, added Plant Manager Jerry Miller, noting, “Over the past 116 years, members have supported Lehigh Cement, and they continue to make us proud to be a part of the southern Indiana community.”

Lehigh’s involvement in the town is vast and includes the building and maintenance of Lehigh Fields; a public space that hosts spring baseball games, plus sponsorship of community events, led by Mitchell’s annual Fourth of July fireworks. In addition to community outreach, Lehigh has a long history of understanding the importance of preserving land. In 1928, it donated 258 acres east of Mitchell to the former Indiana Department of Conservation. The state eventually developed the property into Spring Mill State Park, now spanning 1,358 acres for recreational use by Hoosiers from Lawrence County and throughout Indiana.

“Community involvement and philanthropy continue to be top priorities for Lehigh Cement,” Miller affirmed. “We’ve worked hard to create a positive legacy in Mitchell and look forward to continuing it for years to come.”

PMI TECHNOLOGY BENEFITS BORAL

Atlanta-based Boral Coal Combustion Products, the leader in fly ash marketing and management, has acquired the Carbon Burn-Out (CBO) technology of PMI Ash Technologies LLC, Raleigh, N.C. The CBO process brings the quality of fly ash produced at coal-fueled electric generating stations to ASTM C618 grade, and can also be used to cost-effectively convert impounded ash to high-quality pozzolan for concrete.

“This acquisition demonstrates [our] commitment to maintaining the largest and most robust fly ash supply chain in the United States,” says Boral Coal Combustion Products Vice President of Business Development Steve Benza. “CBO helps us continue to provide utility clients with effective tools for ensuring beneficial use of their coal ash, while providing concrete producer customers with high-quality, reliable sources of pozzolans.”

PMI’s technology has been fully commercial since 1999, with four installations that boast a combined processing capacity of approximately 1 million tons per year. CBO combusts residual carbon in fly ash, producing a very consistent, low carbon, high-quality pozzolan. The process is continuous, fueled by the residual carbon in the ash, and returns recovered heat to the power plant. It joins these Boral ash beneficiation technologies: ASM Ammonia Slip Mitigation; RestoreAir/PACT Passivation of Carbon in Ash; SorbSensor Instrumentation for Ash Quality; and, P2 Performance Pozzolan (blended ash product).
