Icon sandwich wall shear connector achieves high seismic score

IconX LLC reports that its namesake shear connector, used in composite insulated sandwich wall panel construction, has successfully completed cyclic load testing for seismic zones, meeting ICC AC320 Acceptance Criteria for Fiber-reinforced Composite Connectors Anchored in Concrete.



Charter Icon producers include the Tiltcon Division of Harrisonburg, Va.-based Nielsen Builders Inc., whose crews prepare a panel for a finishing pour; and Minnesota’s Molin Concrete Products, which used the connector in the 12-in. sandwich wall project shown below.

“[It] retained approximately 100 percent of its static strength after the prescribed 140 load cycles, exceeding the 80 percent minimum,” says IconX CEO Joel Foderberg. “We are excited to offer a code compliant insulated panel solution to the market. Seismic force testing on a full-scale insulated panel is scheduled to be completed this summer; investigators will focus on reducing footing reactions for panels used for building shear forces. Icon Model-23 and Model-34 (shown) connectors, respectively, suit precast or tilt-up panels with 2-3 inches (R-8 to R-25) or 3-4 inches (R-12 to R-34) of insulation. Fabricated from glass fiber and epoxy resin, they form thermally efficient, composite wall panels, and are engineered to transfer shear loads between inside and outside concrete layers. Precast plant or tilt-up site crews position the connectors and their foam “dams” at specified panel points.
