Newly published ASTM C1786, Specification for Segmental Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains and Sewers Designed According to AASHTO LRFD relieves producers and engineers from having to refer to alternative ASTM standards for similar structures—each lacking segmental culvert design and fabrication specifics.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials practice referenced in the C1786 title employs load and resistance factor design methodology using inputs from current statistical knowledge of loads and structural conditions. Segmental precast box sections specified for underground storm water, industrial wastes and sewage conveyance, or to create pedestrian tunnels and wildlife passage areas under heavily travelled highways.
Developed by ASTM Subcommittee C13.07 on Acceptance Specifications and Precast Concrete Box Section, C1786 is the first Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe standard centered on precast segmental box culverts. While AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications provide design guidance, C13 member and American Concrete Pipe Association Technical Director Josh Beakley notes, small communities and agencies are not always as familiar with AASHTO requirements as state departments of transportation. “C1786 incorporates design guidance as referenced in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, with the production and quality control measures synonymous with an ASTM precast standard, so that practicing engineers can get a good start when considering the use of this product,” he adds.
