ROAD BUILDERS CONCUR WITH WHITE HOUSE ON TRANSPORTATION FUNDING REAUTHORIZATION
The American Road and Transportation Builders Association reacted favorably to the Obama administration’s FY 2015 budget, released early last month, which recommends investing $90.9 billion in transportation improvements, a proposed $18.6 billion over the FY 2014 amount, or a 25.7 percent increase. In a follow up to the president’s late-February outline MAP-21 reauthorization priorities, the administration again called for a four-year, $302 billion surface transportation program from FY 2015 through FY 2018.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Center for Corporate Climate Leadership announced the third annual Climate Leadership Award winners in partnership with the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and The Climate Registry. Nationally, 19 awards were given to 15 organizations and two individuals in the public and private sectors for their leadership in addressing climate change by reducing carbon pollution.

The National Concrete Masonry Association elected its board of directors during the NCMA Annual Convention earlier this year in Palm Springs, Calif. Dale Puskas of Basalite Concrete Products was elected NCMA chairman of the board, citing among primary goals, “Maintaining and growing market share against competitive systems, improving the recent decline in membership due to the economic downturn and the perceived value of associations in general, advocating for government regulations and establishing organizational succession planning as new leaders begin to emerge in our industry.”

Giovannetti Community Shelter in Urbandale, Iowa, is constructed with precast wall panels and hollow core roof plank, and has a Federal Emergency Management Agency-rated, 4,500-sq.-ft. safe room designed to withstand 250-mph wind forces and structural impacts. The project, however, had some difficulty coming to fruition. In fact, it first began as an ordinary park shelter among the 75-acre Walker Johnston Park—on a proposed budget that was half of what its community center program required.
