Vulcan again tops USGS Top 100 crushed stone rankings

Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Va.

Using 2009 statistics, USGS has produced its yearly Top 100 list of crushed stone producers in the nation, and Birmingham, Ala.-based Vulcan Materials Co. retaining the top spot. Rock Products published an enhancement of the list in its May issue, which included contact information for each major producer. USGS obtains its data from production and sales reports provided by the crushed stone operations. When an operation does not report any data to the USGS, their total production is estimated by using employment data provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

With no change in the top 13 from last year, rounding out the top 5 were Martin Marietta Aggregates, Raleigh, N.C.; Lehigh Hanson, Inc., Irving, Texas; Oldcastle Materials, Inc., Atlanta; and Cemex S.A.B. de C.V., Houston. Additionally, the 2011 list saw the addition of several companies that did not make the top 100 in 2010. For a complete listing of the top producers, visit the Rock Products website.
