A rebuilt, billion-gallon capacity reservoir, harboring North America’s largest roller compacted concrete placement to date, has allowed Ameren UE to reactivate the 440-mw Taum Sauk Pump Storage Plant. A new upper-reservoir portion, crest and 3.5-ft. parapet wall combine for the RCC record, easily besting PCA-noted stalwarts such as Utah’s Upper Stillwater Dam (1987, 1.47 million yd.), California’s Olivenhain Dam (2002, 1.44 million yd.), and South Carolina’s Saluda Dam (2005, 1.3 million yd.).

AmerenUE began generating power from Taum Sauk in mid-April, following regulatory review and a four-year rebuilding program by Ozark Constructors, LLC. A joint venture of St. Louis aggregate producer Fred Weber Inc. and Colorado heavy/civil specialist ASI Constructors Inc., Ozark Constructors recycled crushed concrete from the old structure in the new RCC mixes.
